ALBANY, N.Y. – The attorney for trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. argued Tuesday in court that the New York State Racing and Wagering Board’s case against his client is tainted by an “indefensible conflict of interest” on the part of board chairman John Sabini and that the organization’s ruling to revoke the trainer’s license for 10 years should be dismissed.
Rapid Redux, a winner of a modern United States record 22 straight races, has been retired and is being shipped this week to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky.
Owner Robert Cole Jr. said at the Alibi Breakfast at Pimlico on Thursday that after trying for months to get the 6-year-old gelding ready to race again, he decided that enough was enough.
“He’s perfect right now, and we want him to stay that way,” said Cole. “Why risk having him get beat?”
INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Jockey Tyler Baze’s expected return to riding this spring following a suspension last summer has been postponed indefinitely after he was arrested on a misdemeanor charge in Monrovia Calif., on Tuesday.
Officials with the Monrovia Police Department on Thursday would not state the nature of the arrest, citing a privacy policy. According to a person familiar with the case, Baze was arrested for an alcohol-related offense.
Steve Beneto, a Thoroughbred owner and the president of a California-based aircraft company, has been appointed to the California Horse Racing Board, Gov. Jerry Brown announced on Thursday.
Beneto, 74, of Carmichael, Calif., has owned horses for decades. His current stable includes Longview Drive, a two-time stakes winner on the California fair circuit last year who was third in the Alcatraz Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on May 12. Longview Drive was ninth in the Santa Anita Derby last month.
Kentucky licensing regulators on Wednesday denied a request by jockey Robby Albarado to have an indefinite suspension lifted, ruling that the rider should remain on the sidelines until the resolution of charges that he abused a woman.
The License Review Committee of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission deferred action on Albarado’s plea until at least July 18, when he is set to appear in a trial on the abuse charges. Albarado was arrested on May 4 and charged with fourth-degree assault of Carolina Martinez, who has said she is Albarado’s girlfriend.

Ness sent out 79 winners from 168 starters at the Tampa meet. The second-leading trainer, Gerald Bennett, had 32 winners.
