Crist's condition remains stable

Steven Crist, editor and publisher emeritus of Daily Racing Form, remained in stable but critical condition Wednesday after suffering cardiac arrest April 6 at his home in Hempstead, New York.

Crist, 57, had the episode one day after attending the Wood Memorial card at Aqueduct. He was in critical but stable condition Monday morning.

Crist was part of a group that purchased the DRF in 1998. The group later sold the newspaper, but Crist stayed on as publisher emeritus and as a columnist.

Kentucky Derby: Albano withdrawn from consideration

Albano, the winner of the Sugar Bowl Stakes in December, will not start in the Kentucky Derby.

Albano, who was placed fourth in the Louisiana Derby in his most recent start, will bypass the May 3 Kentucky Derby, according to his owner and breeder, Brereton C. Jones.

Bayern , a prime contender for Saturday's Arkansas Derby, did not make his career debut until Jan 4. No horse unraced at 2 has won the Kentucky Derby since 1882.

In 1882, the electric iron was patented, Jesse James was killed, and Apollo won the Kentucky Derby. The Derby was 8 years old. It turns the ripe old age of 140 this year, and in all the years since, no horse has equaled the feat of Apollo, who won the Derby after never racing at age 2.

Santa Anita Derby Day produces attendance, handle gains

ARCADIA, Calif.- Ontrack attendance and handle for Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby program exceeded the corresponding day in 2013, according to figures released by the track.

The ontrack crowd of 35,241 was 7 percent higher than 2013 figure of 33,005. All-sources handle was $22,542,443, a gain of 13 percent over the $19,897,306 from last year.  The ontrack handle of $4,065,716 was $18,006 higher than in 2013.
