NYRA broadcast may go dark in New York City

Racing fans in the five boroughs of New York could be left in the dark beginning Monday as a contract that allows the New York Racing Association to broadcast its races on television in the city was set to expire.

According to NYRA officials, NYRA and the city are currently involved in negotiations to extend the contract that permits NYRA to show its races – as well as races from out-of-state tracks – on the New York City government access channel  (1994 and 71 on Time Warner Cable, 27 on FIOS, and 74 on Cablevision in Brooklyn and the Bronx).

Napravnik injured in Sunday morning training spill

Jockey Rosie Napravnik is expected to miss four to six weeks after suffering a separated should in a training spill Sunday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Less than 10 hours after winning the Matt Winn Stakes aboard Tapiture at Churchill Downs, star jockey Rosie Napravnik suffered a shoulder injury in a Sunday morning training spill involving a filly named Socialbug.

Churchill reported through Napravnik’s husband, Joe Sharp, and publicity agent Kelly Wietsma that the 26-year-old jockey suffered a “mild separation” of the clavicle in the left shoulder joint. The report stated the injury will not require surgery and that Napravnik is expected to be out about four to six weeks.

Steeplechase jockey injured in spill at Monmouth

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Jockey Bernard Dalton sustained a fractured right clavicle in a steeplechase spill on Friday at Monmouth Park.

Dalton went down in a three-horse pileup in the third race. He was taken to a nearby hospital,  where the injury was diagnosed.

The incident put a damper the return of the jumpers to Monmouth. The two steeplechase races were the first at the track since the fall of 2010.

Thoroughbred misidentified in Quarter Horse race

CYPRESS, Calif. – A 3-year-old Thoroughbred was erroneously allowed to run against Quarter Horses in a 300-yard maiden race at Los Alamitos in April, resulting in a fine for the track’s horse identifier, according to a ruling published this month by track stewards.

Intense Holiday euthanized after suffering from laminitis

Starlight Racing retired Grade 2 Intense Holiday Tuesday after the colt was injured while training for the Belmont Stakes.

Intense Holiday, a Grade 2 stakes winner who finished 12th in this year’s Kentucky Derby, was euthanized on Thursday, succumbing to a case of laminitis, according to a press release issued late Thursday afternoon by his connections, Starlight Racing.

Intense Holiday, who won the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds in February, suffered a condylar fracture to his right foreleg while working out with Commissioner at Belmont Park on May 25 in preparation for last Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.

Suffolk, horsemen reach dates deal

EAST BOSTON, Mass. - The New England chapter of the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association and the management of Suffolk Downs have agreed on a deal that would extend the current meet to Sept. 29 but reduce the total number of live racing days due to the ongoing shortage of horses on the grounds.

Team Valor purchases maiden winner Tulira's Star

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Tulira’s Star, an impressive debut-winning 2-year-old filly at Arlington, was purchased by Team Valor this week and will be turned over to trainer Rick Mettee.

Unveiled by trainer Jim DiVito in the third race here June 8, Tulira’s Star pressed the early pace and drew off to win a maiden race by 3 1/2 lengths, running 4 1/2 furlongs on Polytrack in 52.36 seconds. The raw time produced a Beyer Speed Figure of 88, the second-highest 2-year-old Beyer so far in 2014.

Lines are drawn in Triple Crown debate

Talk about changing the Triple Crown typically peaks during the week leading up to the Belmont Stakes and then usually fades quickly and quietly into the sunset, to be forgotten until a high-profile injury or dropout the next year. But this year, supporters of changing the series are vowing to keep the perennial discussion alive throughout the summer, adding some new ammunition in the debate.

Arlington cuts purses in response to handle decline

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Arlington Park instituted an across-the-board purse cut beginning last weekend due to a sharp year-to-year drop in all-sources handle.

Purses here were cut from $2,500 at the top end of the purse scale to $500 at the bottom end.

“We hope that this is temporary,” said Arlington general manager Tony Petrillo.

Commissioner to have ankle chip removed

Commissioner, the Belmont Stakes runner-up, will miss the summer’s major races in the 3-year-old division due to a chip in his left front ankle that will require surgery, according to a press release issued Wednesday by his owner, the WinStar Farm.

Commissioner will have the chip removed this week by Dr. Larry Bramlage at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., according to the release.
