Daily Racing Form wins 6 AHP awards

Daily Racing Form won six writing awards for work published in 2013 at the American Horse Publications annual awards dinner, presented Saturday night in Charleston, S.C.

Regular contributor Mary Simon won two awards – for best personality profile for “Daring Diane,” an article on riding pioneer Diane Crump that was published June 22, 2013, and for best personal column for the article “Catching up with A.P. Indy: Still carrying himself like a champion,” which was published May 5.

Small fields throughout Sunday pick six

ARCADIA, Calif. – The pick six will be the focus for many bettors Sunday after the bet was not hit Saturday, leading to a carryover of $103,974.

The pick six begins with the fourth race Sunday, which has a post time of 2:32 p.m. Pacific.

Field sizes are not large in the pick six Sunday, with seven, seven, seven, seven, nine, and eight runners in the fourth through ninth races.

One of the shortest prices in the pick six races is Nikki Allyn in the fourth race, a five-furlong maiden claimer for 3-year-olds and up. Nikki Allyn is 6-5 on the morning line.

Precautionary quarantine lifted at Belmont Park

ELMONT, N.Y. – A precautionary quarantine placed on Barn 22 at Belmont Park on Friday morning was lifted Saturday afternoon after test results on a horse in that barn were negative for EHV-1, equineherpes virus, according to the chief examining veterinarian for the New York Racing Association.

Horses residing in that barn were permitted to train with the general population as well as race beginning Sunday. Trainers with horses in that barn include Pat Kelly, George Weaver, Tom Albertrani, and Christophe Clement.

Short-term agreement reached on New York City television contract

ELMONT, N.Y. - The New York Racing Association and New York City have agreed to a short-term extension of a contract that will permit races to be shown on the city’s cable access channel throughout the five boroughs through July 6, NYRA officials said Saturday.

Canterbury cancels Thursday program because of storms

SHAKOPEE, Minn.  – Officials at Canterbury Park announced that the Thursday night racing card has been canceled due to inclement weather. 

“Due to the immense amount of rain we received today and to impending storms with lightning that are expected to be coming through the area for the next several hours, racing has been canceled for tonight,” Canterbury Park president Randy Sampson said.

Horses isolated after EHM death

EAST BOSTON, Mass. – Horses stabled in a single barn at Suffolk Downs are being isolated from the general population following the death of one horse that tested positive for equine herpes myelitis.

In a memo sent to horsemen at the track, Dr. Lorraine O'Connor, the chief veterinary health officer for the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, outlined the symptoms of EHM and wrote it can cause respiratory disease, severe illness, and neurological disease.

NYRA-New York City television contract expires

Racing fans in the five boroughs of New York could be left in the dark when live racing resumes Wednesday at Belmont Park because a contract that allows the New York Racing Association to broadcast its races on a city-owned cable channel expired on Monday.

NYRA officials said they are involved in negotiations to extend the contract, which permits NYRA to show its races as well as races from out-of-state tracks on the New York City government access channel (1994 and 71 on Time Warner Cable, 27 on FIOS, and 74 on Cablevision in Brooklyn and the Bronx).

Taylor, Bradley elected to Racing Hall of Fame

E.P. Taylor and Col. E.R. Bradley have been elected to the Racing Hall of Fame in the category of Pillars of the Turf. That category, which was introduced last year and is decided by committee, honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to racing.

August Belmont II and Paul Mellon were inductees as Pillars of the Turf in 2013. Taylor and Bradley will be inducted Aug. 8 along with jockeys Lloyd Hughes and Alex Solis, trainer Gary Jones, and racehorses Ashado, Clifford, and Curlin.

Velazquez to ride Untapable in Mother Goose

Kentucky Oaks winner Untapable will run next in either the Acorn or the Mother Goose at Belmont Park.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez has been named by trainer Steve Asmussen as the replacement for injured Rosie Napravnik on Untapable in the upcoming Mother Goose Stakes, a Grade 1 race for which the star filly made further preparations early Monday when breezing five furlongs in company in 1:01.20 over a fast Churchill Downs surface.
