Mahoning Valley adds two stakes in November

Mahoning Valley Race Course in Youngstown, Ohio, has added two stakes races to its fall schedule, according to Penn National Gaming Inc., the track’s parent company, and both will be part of a series of races linked to the parent’s racetracks.

The two stakes will be held Nov. 23 at Mahoning Valley, which held its first race meet late last year. The $200,000 Steel Valley Sprint will be for 3-year-olds at six furlongs and will be joined by the $75,000 Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Distaff, for fillies and mares ages 3 and up, also at six furlongs.

Interpol makes graded stakes debut in Nijinsky

Interpol has won two of his three starts in 2015 and is set to test graded stakes waters for the first time in Sunday’s Grade 2 Nijinsky Stakes over 1 1/8 miles on turf.

Interpol has worked his way through his conditions by winning three of his last four starts, and although he could still be eligible for a third-level allowance condition, trainer Sid Attard felt the timing was right to let Interpol prove himself against stakes company.

Car chase ends at Lone Star Park

A car chase through Grand Prairie, Texas, on Sunday ended on the Lone Star Park apron shortly before the start of the 10-race card. A man attempting to evade police drove onto track grounds during the chase, rammed through a closed metal gate near the track’s concert area, and continued onto the apron, according to Lyle Gensler, public information officer for the Grand Prairie Police Department.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – California Chrome, the 2014 Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year, is out of the Arlington Million and unlikely to race again in 2015 after being diagnosed with a bruised cannon bone, trainer Art Sherman said Sunday afternoon.

Paul Boghossian, owner of Triple B Farms, dies at 73

Paul Boghossian, who owned Grade 1 winners Richard's Kid and Shamdinan, died on Thursday, his family announced on Friday.

Hratch Paul Boghossian was 73. He was born in Syria in 1941, and immigrated to the United States in 1964.
Racing as Triple B Farms, a name that reflected the involvement of his sons Paul Jr. and Christopher, Boghossian owned the stakes winners Richard’s Kid, Shamdinan, Shediak, Tribal Spy and Whilly.

Benefit scheduled for paralyzed jockey Alyssa Selman

There will be a benefit on July 19 for jockey Alyssa Selman, who is paralyzed from the waist down after a bad spill at Assiniboia Downs on June 27.

Selman’s mount, Lord Jasmond, clipped heels with a rival and fell. Selman suffered a back injury that required surgery, and she has been recovering at the Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Donations and prizes have been pouring in for the fundraiser, which will be held at 7 p.m. on the main floor of Assiniboia Downs. Tickets are $15.

Passed Due carries win streak into Colorado Derby

Passed Due won Arapahoe Park’s richest race for 2-year-olds last year, the $100,000 Gold Rush Futurity. He will attempt to add another of the track’s marquee races to his résumé Sunday when he starts in the $40,000 Colorado Derby.

Passed Due will be chasing his third straight win when he runs in the 1 1/16-mile fixture for 3-year-olds. The Colorado Derby will share a card with two other stakes, the $40,000 Colorado Thoroughbred Breeders Association Futurity and the $148,950 Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Futurity.

Hall, Durham make splash with Fasig-Tipton buys

Lewis Hall and his Lone Star Park-based trainer, Danele Durham, hit the Fasig-Tipton July auction on Thursday in a significant way, taking home seven promising yearlings who are expected to debut next summer in Texas.

Hall’s top purchases included a Malibu Moon colt for $195,000 and a Curlin colt for $120,000. He also took home colts by Colonel John, Gio Ponti, and Astrology as well as a filly by Midshipman. The purchases were to augment Hall’s local breeding program, which has produced such horses as the multiple stakes winner Texas Bling.

Hoover’s large field makes it better betting race than Cincinnatian

All $75,000 races are not created equal. Case in point: two Ohio-bred stakes to be run Sunday at Belterra Park.

Whereas the Cincinnatian drew a short field of 3-year-old fillies badly lacking in respectable form, the Hoover is a terrific wagering event that might even produce a prospect of note from its field of 13 2-year-olds.

Evangeline suspends Patin brothers indefinitely

Jockeys Joe Patin Jr. and Billy Patin, who are among the leading riders at Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La., have been suspended indefinitely by the Louisiana Racing Commission as state police and commission personnel investigate incidents involving the brothers, according to commission personnel.
