Title Contender back on short rest at Hastings

Four-Footed Fotos
Title Contender wins the 2014 Sir Winston Churchill.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Title Contender usually has more than 13 days between races, so it could be a good sign that he’s ready for another strong race after winning a $35,000 optional-claiming race going 6 1/2 furlongs July 5. If he does come back firing, he will be tough to beat in a $50,000 optional-claiming race that headlines the seven-race card Saturday at Hastings.

Title Contender figures to be a short price in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and up that drew six horses and goes as race four.

The 4 1/2-furlong race, which has a purse of $65,000 – $17,000 more than a typical maiden special weight race at Gulfstream – was split into fields of 12 and 11. The races are the first at Gulfstream to bar race-day use of furosemide, also known as Lasix.

O T B Bob poised for first turf win

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – It’s common among handicappers these days to bemoan the ubiquity of the break-and-grab ride in turf races, wherein jockeys on horses whose past performances suggest speed take a big hold right out of the gate, and a race that’s pace-ful on paper winds up paceless in the running.
