Carryovers of $75,755 in pick-six pool, $35,366 in jackpot pool

ARCADIA, Calif. – There are two carryovers in the pick six for Friday, the next day of live racing at Santa Anita.

There is a carryover of $75,755 in the main pick-six pool and a carryover of $35,366 in the single-ticket jackpot pool.

An upset win by Gustnado ($41.40) in Monday’s eighth race clinched the carryover. The single jackpot pool has a two-day carryover and was last hit on Saturday.

Friday’s pick six covers the third through eighth races on a program that begins at 1 p.m. Pacific. The pool of new money in the pick six is likely to exceed $400,000.

Shah sends numerous horses formerly trained by Baffert to O'Neill, Sherman

The New Year’s Eve split between trainer Bob Baffert and long-time client Kaleem Shah has resulted in several promising horses moving to trainers Doug O’Neill and Art Sherman -- including Dortmund, Klimt, American Gal, and Iliad -- and left Shah on Sunday saying that not only had their business arrangement been terminated, but apparently their friendship, too.

War Story joins likely field for Pegasus World Cup

The owners of stakes winner War Story and Kentucky pizza-franchise owner Dan Schafer have reached an agreement to start the 4-year-old gelding in the Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park near Miami, using Schafer’s $1 million slot in the race.

This was the year of reinvention, of second acts, be it in the political theater, where a businessman was voted lead politician of the free world, or in racing, where a horse who nearly won the Triple Crown rose anew two years later to become the best horse on the planet.

Nothing in racing can trump a Triple Crown winner, and for years there were many – largely outside the sport – who said all racing needed to boost its popularity was a Triple Crown winner. In 2015, American Pharoah swept the series. But by year’s end – three races later – he was off to stud.

Legendary handicapper Russ Harris dies at 93

Russ Harris was an athlete and a scholar, but he will always be remembered for being a terrific public handicapper. Harris died Wednesday at the age of 93 at his home in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

“He basically died of old age. He didn’t have a long, drawn-out illness,” said Harris’s son, Craig Donnelly, who followed his father’s footsteps into the field of handicapping.

Maryland Jockey Club moves more 2017 dates to Laurel

The consolidation of racing dates from Pimlico Race Course to Laurel Park will continue in 2017, when the two Maryland Jockey Club tracks race a combined 162 days, five more programs than were originally approved for this year.

The Pimlico meet, which held 37 days of racing in 2015, was shortened to 28 days last year. In 2017, Pimlico will run for three weeks, a total of 12 racing days. The Pimlico dates reduction was first reported by the Racing Biz website.

Crist, Beyer to receive Eclipse Award of Merit

Steven Crist and Andrew Beyer are the recipients of the 2016 Eclipse Award of Merit, it was announced Thursday by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form, and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters.

Crist and Beyer are widely recognized as trendsetters in the field of turf writing. Both came to prominence in the 1970s and ’80s as outspoken advocates for the horseplaying public, with Beyer becoming an iconic racing writer for the Washington Post and Crist for the New York Times and Daily Racing Form.

Tampa Bay jockey Alderson hospitalized following race spill

Jockey Bryce Alderson was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in “serious but stable” condition, according to track officials, as a result of a spill which took place during the running of Wednesday’s fourth race at Tampa Bay Downs.

Alderson was aboard Expialidocious, a 3–year-old first time starter trained by Julie Belhumeur who fell when bumped by another rival, Squeakers Shadow, near midstretch of the one-mile maiden claiming race on turf.  Expialidocious reportedly escaped the incident without any serious injuries.

Pennsylvania Racing Commission revokes Ramon Preciado's license

For the second time this month, Ramon Preciado's trainer's license has been revoked.

Preciado, the leading trainer at Parx Racing in both 2015 and 2014, has had at least 16 clenbuterol positives the past two seasons. The Parx stewards revoked his license in a Dec. 12 ruling for a clenbuterol violation in July.

On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Racing Commission, at its monthly meeting, revoked his license again, for eight clenbuterol positives, two that he incurred at the end of 2015 and six from March and April of this year.
