Lane Luzzi displays the silks of number 1 Flo's Strawberry after winning his first race Friday.

The apprentice jockey category can be one of the most difficult for Eclipse Awards voters. It is not easy to compare young riders from different circuits, and often the apprentices are not well known beyond their region.

When the three finalists are announced in early January, Lane Luzzi and Luis Ocasio are sure to be among them. Their mounts have earned the most purse money among apprentices, and through Tuesday they led by wins.

It’s been a breakthrough year for Aaron West, but the 28-year-old trainer isn’t about to get all high on himself.

“There have been more people to help me in this business than I could ever pay back,” said West.

West entered this week of action at Turfway Park with 50 wins in 2016, a career high. In August, he not only won his first stakes, with an Ohio-bred colt named Jocker Justice, but he and his wife, Ashley, became new landowners. They purchased Cain’s Thoroughbred training center in Russell Springs, Ky., from the estate of trainer Joe Cain and his wife, Peggy.

Forever Unbridled sidelined by ankle chip

Barbara D. Livingston
Forever Unbridled has two Grade 1 wins this year.

Forever Unbridled, the multiple Grade 1-winning filly who finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff last month, was to undergo routine minor surgery Tuesday to remove a bone chip from her left-front ankle, trainer Dallas Stewart said.

Forever Unbridled had been stabled with Stewart at Fair Grounds following the Breeders’ Cup but has left for Kentucky, where the surgery will be performed at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington. Forever Unbridled turns 5 on Jan. 1, but Stewart said owner Charles Fipke still intends to race her in 2017.
