Santa Anita: String of favorites in $5,014 pick six; $108,893 jackpot carryover for Sunday

ARCADIA, Calif.- The $2 pick six paid $5,014 at Santa Anita on Saturday, a day in which four favorites obliged.

Because there were multiple winning tickets sold, the carryover provision in the single ticket jackpot pool increased to $108,893 for Sunday’s program.

There was no carryover in the main pick six pool going into Saturday’s program. There was a carryover of $85,520 in the single ticket pool in Saturday’s program.

Aqueduct cancels Saturday card due to jockeys' safety concerns

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Saturday’s nine-race card at Aqueduct was canceled after the jockeys told New York Racing Association management they wouldn’t ride, citing safety concerns related to winter weather conditions. It was the second cancellation of the winter meet.

2016 Eclipse Awards: Drefong

Drefong won all four of his starts in 2016.

For Drefong, 2016 was one long holiday weekend.

In four starts, he won first- and second-level optional-claiming races at Santa Anita on Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, the King’s Bishop at Saratoga on Travers Day, and the Sprint on Breeders’ Cup Saturday.

His efforts have made him a finalist for the Eclipse Award as the nation’s top male sprinter. Like fellow finalist Lord Nelson, who also was undefeated in four starts on the year, Drefong is trained by Bob Baffert.

Steeplechase photo earns Marks an Eclipse Award

Tod Marks, a freelance photographer who specializes in racing, has been named the 2016 Eclipse Award winner for Photography for a picture of the stretch run of a hurdle race at the Iroquois Steeplechase meet on May 14 in Nashville, Tenn., the administrators of the awards announced late on Wednesday.

Marks, who resides in Yonkers, N.Y., is the primary photographer for the National Steeplechase Association and contributes photos to a variety of publications. The winning photograph appeared in the July/August issue of The Chronicle of the Horse Untacked.

Santa Anita: Pick-six carryover of $75,755 for Friday's program

ARCADIA, Calif. – There are two carryovers in the pick six at Santa Anita on Friday – $75,755 in the main pool and $35,366 in the single-ticket jackpot pool.

An upset win by Gustnado ($41.40) in Monday’s eighth race clinched the carryover. The jackpot pool has a two-day carryover and was last hit on Saturday.

Friday’s pick six covers the third through eighth races on a program that begins at 1 p.m. Pacific. The pool of new money in the pick six is likely to exceed $400,000.

DRF wins Multi-Media Eclipse Award

Daily Racing Form has been named the winner of a 2016 Media Eclipse Award for Audio/Multi-Media and Internet for a piece appearing on its website profiling the longevity of three Hall of Fame riders, the administrators of the awards announced on Tuesday.

The piece, called “Time Bandits,” was written by Jay Hovdey, DRF’s executive columnist who has won four previous Eclipse Awards for writing. Barbara Livingston, DRF’s staff photographer who has won three photography Eclipses, provided pictures, while Molly McGill, a free-lance videographer, produced video elements.

Colorful New England trainer Carlos Figueroa dies

Carlos Figueroa, a legend in New England racing circles, died Tuesday at age 88 at his home in Salem, N.H., not far from the now-defunct Rockingham Park.

His wife, Pearl, reportedly went to wake him, but could not.

Figueroa, a native of Puerto Rico, was nicknamed the "The King of the Fairs" in Massachusetts, and known for his straw Panama hat; loud, flowered shirts; white pants; and pencil-thin mustache.

"He was the most Damon Runyon-esque guy you ever met," said Sam Elliott, the director of racing at Parx, who was a longtime New England racing official.

Jorge Navarro to train War Story for Pegasus World Cup

War Story, under Antonio Gallardo, wins his first stakes by 7 3/4 lengths in the Queens County.

War Story will be trained by Jorge Navarro for the $12 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 28, owner Ron Paolucci said.

War Story, winner of the Queens County Stakes at Aqueduct on Dec. 17, left the Parx barn of trainer Mario Serey Jr. Monday afternoon and was being vanned to Gulfstream Park West, where Navarro is based.
