Capuano won't be penalized for horse's trace cocaine positive

Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club
Trainer Dale Capuano won his 3,000th race on Thursday at Laurel Park.

Stewards at Laurel Park in Maryland have cited “mitigating circumstances” in ruling that trainer Dale Capuano should not be fined or suspended after a horse he trained tested positive for a trace amount of cocaine after winning a race at the track in July.

The ruling, dated Aug. 31, states that an employee of Capuano’s barn was asked to provide a urine sample because of “his past history and the drug in question,” but the employee refused. However, the employee said he was in possession of cocaine at the time the horse ran, according to the ruling.

Indiana would deny Navarro license

Stewards at Indiana Grand told trainer Jorge Navarro on Tuesday morning he would be denied an Indiana trainer’s license if he applied for one.

Navarro, who has been based in New Jersey, never has run a horse in Indiana before and thus has no license in the state. Navarro entered the mare Duchess of Duke to run in the $100,000 Merrillville Stakes on Wednesday, and as things stand the horse will be scratched.

An incident involving Navarro and one of his owners at Monmouth Park precipitated the Indiana stewards’ decision.

Delta Downs may cancel eight upcoming stakes races this year, including the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot.

Delta Downs is considering the elimination of eight stakes races in October and November, including the track’s signature race, the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot.

Delta is located in Vinton, La., close to the Texas border and part of an area hard hit by Hurricane Harvey. Delta relies on the Houston metropolitan area, which experienced catastrophic damage from Harvey, for much of its business, and a decline in casino revenues since the hurricane has compromised the purse fund for Delta’s upcoming 2017-2018 race meeting.
