Graded stakes winner Unified retired, will stand at Lane's End

Multiple graded stakes winner Unified has been retired and will begin his stud career at Lane's End in 2018, the farm announced Thursday.

The son of Candy Ride, a prominent stallion at Lane's End, will debut for an advertised fee of $10,000.

Unified, trained by Jimmy Jerkens for Centennial Farms, won the first three starts of his career, graduating to graded company in just his second start to win the Grade 3 Bay Shore Stakes at seven furlongs and subsequently taking the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes at 1 1/8 miles.

Two-time champion Songbird retired

Songbird is retired with wins in 13 of her 15 starts and more than $4.5 million in career earnings.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Two-time champion Songbird was retired Thursday after initial medical tests showed enlarged suspensories in her hind end and subsequent tests revealed greater physical problems, owner Rick Porter announced.

Porter made the announcement on Facebook. The decision to end Songbird’s career comes days after she finished second to Forever Unbridled in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes on Aug. 26 at Saratoga.

Trevor Denman finding more honors

Trevor Denman, the voice of Santa Anita, Del Mar and Fairplex, will have less time to spend on his Minnesota farm.

Trevor Denman, whose style of racecalling revolutionized the craft in this country, has been named to the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame, joining a roster that includes such legends as Vin Scully, Chick Hearn, and Bob Miller, among others.

Denman has been the racecaller at Del Mar since 1984, and for more than 30 years called at Santa Anita. He also has called at two now-defunct racecourses in Southern California, Hollywood Park and Fairplex Park.

He will be inducted during an awards luncheon on Jan. 22 at Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake.

Trainer Morley, owner Proscia suspended for improper transfer of horse

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Tom Morley and owner Peter Proscia each will serve a 20-day suspension at the beginning of the Belmont Park fall meet, and both of them, along with trainer Steve Asmussen and his assistant Toby Sheets, were fined $5,000 by the New York State Gaming Commission for their roles in the improper transfer of the horse Life in Shambles last month.

DRF's Hegarty to receive Walter Haight Award

Matt Hegarty of Daily Racing Form has been voted the Walter Haight Award for career excellence in racing journalism by his peers with the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters Association.

Hegarty is one of four honorees the NTWAB will fete at its awards dinner, which is held annually during Breeders’ Cup week. This year’s event will be held the night of Nov. 2 at The Brigantine, the popular restaurant located just above the far turn at Del Mar.

Spawr suspended 30 days after excessive-clenbuterol test results

DEL MAR, Calif. - Trainer Bill Spawr has been suspended 30 days and fined $3,000 as part of a settlement agreement with the California Horse Racing Board after Skye Diamonds showed an excessive amount of clenbuterol in a post-race test taken after her second-place finish in the Grade 3 Adoration Stakes at Santa Anita on May 7.

The suspension begins Monday and continues through Sept. 26. Spawr is banned from the racetrack and stable area during the suspension. His barn will be run by his assistant, Darryl Rader.

All-sources handle second-highest for Travers Day card

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - All-sources handle on Saturday’s 13-race Travers Day card at Saratoga was $47,870,984, a 5-percent increase over last year’s $45,596,366 and the second-highest total ever for a Travers card.

Only the 2015 Travers card, which included an appearance by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, handled more at $49,668,754.

Ontrack handle Saturday was $10,862,094, less than 1 percent higher than last year’s figure of $10,778,993.
