ELMONT, N.Y. - Coal Front emerged from his victory in Saturday’s Grade 3 Gallant Bob Stakes at Parx Racing with a non-displaced condylar fracture in his right foreleg, leaving his racing future uncertain.

Dr. Patty Hogan operated on Coal Front Monday at her clinic in Cream Ridge, N.J., inserting two screws to stabilize the injury, according to John Panagot, racing manager for Robert LaPenta, who owns Coal Front with Sol Kumin’s Head of Plains Partners.

Panagot said it is likely that Coal Front would return to racing next year.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The successful Woodbine owner John Unger died last Thursday from cancer at the age of 62.

Unger bred and owned the popular Strut the Course, a multiple graded stakes winner with earnings of just more than $1 million. Trained by Barbara Minshall, Strut the Course was voted the Sovereign Award as Canada’s champion older female in 2014.

Unger was a corporate tax lawyer for Torys LLP. He was a member of the Jockey Club of Canada and the Horse Racing Appeal Panel.

Although Mark Beecher took home the only individual trophy in the inaugural Real Rider Cup at Plantation Field on Sept. 17, collaboration was the theme of the event.

The New Jersey Racing Commission on Wednesday approved a recommendation from the stewards at Monmouth Park that the commission increase a set of fines that had been levied on trainer Jorge Navarro and the owner Randal Gindi, according to the executive director of the commission.

CYPRESS, Calif. – Jimmy Barnes, the longtime assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, was being treated for a fractured pelvis on Sunday after being unseated from the stable pony earlier in the day.

“He stumbled,” Baffert said. “The pony lost his footing. He just went down. It was a freaky thing.”

It was not immediately known how long Barnes would be hospitalized.

There was a case of mistaken horse identity in the fifth race Saturday night at Remington Park, and the mix-up was confirmed to Daily Racing Form by Karl Broberg, who trains both horses involved. Collateral Kitten is listed as the official winner of the non-winners-of-two-lifetime turf route, but the mare Onemorefastdance, a four-time winner, actually ran in the race. The Paulick Report first reported the case, citing a tip from Onemorefastdance’s breeder, John Lowder.

Broberg was reached by DRF on Sunday.

Penny Chenery, the beloved owner of Secretariat whose influence on the sport spanned decades and whose standing inspired generations of women in racing, died on Saturday at her home in Colorado from complications of a stroke at age 95, her family announced on Sunday via her publicist.

Chenery was best known for the way in which she shared Secretariat with the public, both while he was racing and in burnishing his legacy after he retired, but she touched the sport in countless ways.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Green Mask, a top contender for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar this fall, suffered a fractured sesamoid in his left foreleg during a workout Sunday morning at Belmont Park. The injury will end his racing career.

Green Mask, a 6-year-old gelding trained by Brad Cox for owner Abdullah Saeed Almaddah, was sent Sunday afternoon by van to the New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania, where surgeons were to operate on him.

Two jockeys were taken to the hospital and a horse was euthanized as the result of a five-horse spill in the sixth race at Charles Town on Friday night.

The accident was the second involving five horses in the Mid-Atlantic region in two days. On Thursday at Delaware Park, jockeys Jose Ferrer and Victor Carrasco were injured in a five-horse spill.

Three-day eventers love Thoroughbreds, and on Sunday, Sept. 17, the worlds of racing and eventing will come together to benefit each other. Twenty off-track Thoroughbreds and an eclectic mix of riders will team up in the inaugural Real Rider Cup, a unique jumping competition at the Plantation Field International Horse Trials in Unionville, Pa., one of the East Coast’s premier three-day events. Proceeds will benefit Plantation Field and the Retired Racehorse Project.
