Former trainer Alex Hassinger escapes harm in Las Vegas shooting

Trainer Alex Hassinger and his wife, Anne, attended the Route 91 Harvest Festival on Sunday, which became the site of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Former trainer Alex Hassinger was grateful to be home in Texas on Tuesday after he and his wife, Anne, narrowly escaped from the mass shooting Sunday night at a concert they were attending in Las Vegas.

“It was surreal,” Hassinger told Daily Racing Form from his home in New Braunfels, Texas. “We’re very fortunate. We were right there in the middle of it.”

Jockey Mario Chavez dies after being thrown from mount

Jockey Mario Chavez died Sunday, a day after being injured in the Pot O’ Gold Futurity for Paints and Appaloosas at Will Rogers Downs near Tulsa, Okla., track and Oklahoma Racing Commission officials confirmed. Chavez was 42.

Chavez was thrown from his mount, Fishin Paint, after the horse hit the rail in the 350-yard race, according to the chart issued by Equibase. The stakes was a Grade 1 worth $81,800.

Chavez was thrown over the rail, according to Amanda Clinton, a spokesperson for Will Rogers.

Jockey Clawson, after concussion, will no longer ride races

Apprentice jockey Katie Clawson will be out at least another week to recover from a training accident.

Only 15 months after it began, the jockey career of Katie Clawson has come to an end, at least temporarily, perhaps permanently.

Clawson, 20, said Friday she would no longer ride races and was resuming work as an exercise rider. Clawson said she had taken a job galloping horses for trainer Mike Maker.

Dak Attack, the Ellis Park Juvenile winner, has a sore shin and will not be pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, his connections said Monday.

Dak Attack joins Grade 1 Hopeful winner Sporting Chance (knee chip) as two stakes winners who will not be pointing to this year’s Juvenile, which will be run Nov. 4 at Del Mar. Coincidentally, Dak Attack and Sporting Chance ran 1-2 in a June 15 maiden race at Churchill Downs.

Irap has surgery on injured leg

Irap appeared to come out of surgery well on Monday.

Blue Grass winner Irap underwent a three-hour surgery on Monday at the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa., to repair his left front leg, which was injured during the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby at Parx on Saturday. Irap finished second to West Coast in the $1 million race and then was pulled up after nearing the gallop-out turn by jockey Mario Gutierrez.
