Former racing executive Al Stall Sr. dies at 85

Albert Stall Sr., a former longtime chairman of the Louisiana Racing Commission and a prominent Thoroughbred owner, died Sunday in New Orleans at 85. He was the father of four children, including the Breeders’ Cup Classic-winning trainer Al Stall Jr.

Glyshaw, en route to Breeders' Cup, was not far from abyss

Tim Glyshaw was riding shotgun Monday morning, with about 10 hours left to travel in a truck headed from Woodbine Racecourse near Toronto to Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Behind him, in the dimness of an attached horse trailer, was Bullards Alley. It had been 16 hours or so since Bullards Alley not only scored a 42-1 shocker in the Grade 1 Canadian International, but ran his eyeballs out in so doing.

Morris resigns as Stronach's VP of West Coast operations

Joe Morris, the senior vice-president of West Coast operations for The Stronach Group, on Thursday resigned effectively immediately.

The development was not a surprise to those knowledgeable with the inner machinations of life at Santa Anita, where demands and expectations have grown exponentially since Tim Ritvo, the chief operating officer for The Stronach Group, began to spend more time in California. Ritvo has been trying to improve conditions on this circuit in a manner similar to what he and his company have accomplished in Florida and Maryland.

Stewards suspend jockey McMahon for 30 days after failed drug test

Jockey CJ McMahon was suspended Oct. 10 for 30 days by stewards at Indiana Grand because of a positive drug test.

McMahon has ridden only two horses at this Indiana Grand meet, but was drug tested when he had one mount on Sept. 26. A ruling issued by Indiana Grand stewards said his test came back positive for methamphetamine at a level of 380 nanograms per milliliter of urine, and positive for THC at 14.1 nanograms per milliliter. THC is a chemical compound in cannabis. Methamphetamine positives can occur from ingesting various substances, including  over-the-counter medications.

Northern California fairgrounds housing large animals displaced by wildfires

Two fairgrounds in Northern California have been designated as large-animal evacuation centers to assist in helping livestock and horses displaced by the wildfires that have affected large areas of the state north of San Francisco.

Sonoma County Fairgrounds and Solano County Fairgrounds have both been set up to house large animals temporarily and to collect donations to assist animals and humans affected by the fires. Both fairgrounds have permanent stabling for horses and other animals, in part because of their use in the past as tracks on the state’s fair circuit.

Arrogate a happy horse in Tuesday work for Breeders' Cup Classic

Arrogate worked five furlongs in 1:00.20 on Tuesday, and galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.20.

Arrogate, continuing his preparation for a title defense in the Breeders' Cup Classic, had a workout on Tuesday morning at Santa Anita that was similar to what he has done the past couple of weeks - going in company with stablemate Uninvited, starting off well back, and then galloping out an additional furlong.

He was officially credited with a five-furlong drill in 1:00.20, with Santa Anita clockers taking him from the half-mile pole to a furlong past the wire. The time was the best of the first 31 drills at that distance on Tuesday morning.

Bettors group calls for month-long boycott of Keeneland

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The head of a group that has organized boycotts of racetracks in the past urged horseplayers Thursday to avoid betting on races at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Ky., because of the track’s decision to raise its takeout rates for the fall meet.
