When it comes to the Belmont, Pletcher finds fresher is better

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Todd Pletcher has won the Kentucky Derby twice and is winless in the Preakness, but when it comes to the Triple Crown series, he saves his best for last.

Pletcher has won the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes three times, and has finished second in the race five times. Last year, he finished first and third with Tapwrit and Patch.

St. Julien, injured in April spill, recovering from spinal-cord surgery

Jockey Marlon St. Julien has taken positive steps - literally - in his recovery from a spinal cord injury in recent days.

St. Julien on Tuesday walked for several steps around the intensive care unit at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, according to Robyn Dean, the wife of St. Julien’s agent, Bobby Dean. Robyn Dean, who has visited St. Julien regularly and kept abreast of medical developments, said doctors stopped St. Julien from walking any farther for fear of doing too much, too soon.

Justify will face nine in Belmont Stakes

ELMONT, N.Y. - There were no surprises at entry time on Tuesday at Belmont Park, as 10 horses were entered in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. Posts are to be drawn Tuesday night at Citi Field prior to the Mets game against the Orioles.

Baffert poised for double Triple

In 2015, the Bob Baffert-trained American Pharoah became the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years.

ELMONT, N.Y. – There was a moment not long after American Pharoah won the Triple Crown three years ago when trainer Bob Baffert and his long-time assistant Jim Barnes were alone back at the barn, starting to savor what they had just accomplished.

“What do we do now?” Baffert said to Barnes.

“Like Robert Redford in ‘The Candidate,’ ” Baffert said recently, referring to the 1972 movie in which Redford’s character is voted senator, but wonders, in the final scene, what comes next. “He won. And then it’s, what now?”

Breeders’ Cup to open voting for 20 member seats June 6

The Breeders’ Cup will open voting for 20 member seats on June 6 in a biannual election that determines the voters who select the directors of the organization, the organization announced on Thursday.

Votes for the organization’s 39 members are tallied from the roster of stallion and foal nominators to the organization, along proportional lines based on the level of nominations to the Breeders’ Cup. A total of 40 candidates are on the ballot this year to elect 20 members, including 17 incumbents who are standing for re-election.
