Oklahoma Derby, Remington Park Oaks to share card

The Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby and the Grade 3, $200,000 Remington Park Oaks will share a card Sept. 30 at Remington Park, the Oklahoma City track announced Saturday.

It will be the first graded running of the Remington Park Oaks and the first time more than one graded stakes has been during during the track's meet for Thoroughbreds.

The races are part of a schedule of 32 stakes worth a total of $3.7 million for the upcoming meet that opens Aug. 24. The 67-date meet will run through Dec. 16.

Capps posthumously given Van Ness Award

Tim Capps, a longtime racing industry executive who was the director of the University of Louisville’s Equine Industry Program at the time of his death last year at the age of 71, has been posthumously named the winner of the Van Ness Award by the award’s administrator, the American Horse Council.

Tonight's Woodbine card canceled due to power outage

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Woodbine has canceled tonight’s seven-race card due to a major power outage.

Early this afternoon, a telephone pole fell, disrupting power at the track. Toronto Hydro arrived on the scene and cut the main Woodbine Racetrack power feed.

There is no power on the backstretch, and track lighting could not be guaranteed for tonight. The estimated time that power will return is 2 a.m. Thursday.

Racing resumes Friday with a nine-race card beginning at 1 p.m.

Television ratings down for Justify's Belmont Stakes win

The overnight rating for the Belmont Stakes broadcast on NBC on Saturday peaked at an 8.1 with a 19 share, a strong number for any sports broadcast but well below the overnight figures posted for the past two Triple Crown bids in 2015 and 2014.

Okie Diva named Oklahoma-bred Horse of the Year

Okie Diva was named the 2017 Oklahoma-bred Horse of the Year during a recent banquet put on by the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma. She won three of six starts last year, including the Useeit Stakes in December at Remington Park.

Okie Diva, who also was the state’s champion 3-year-old filly, is a daughter of Chitoz who races for her breeder, the Richter Family Trust. She is trained by Donnie Von Hemel.

Longtime Monmouth trainer Pierce dies at 90

Trainer Joseph Pierce Jr. sent out 2,256 winners.

Joseph Pierce Jr., a trainer since 1956, died on Thursday at age 90 following a lengthy illness.

Pierce had trained at Monmouth Park since the late 1960s and was 1 for 4 at the current meet. He sent out the 7-year-old Gourmet Delight, whom he had trained on and off since 2013, to win a $12,500 claiming race at Monmouth on May 26. He had his final starter the next day.

Pierce sent out 2,256 winners and had purse earnings of more than $36 million.

Pierce had been on dialysis in recent years and had battled cancer.

ELMONT, N.Y. – All 10 members of this year’s Belmont Stakes field went to the track to train at Belmont Park on Thursday, but naturally it was the undefeated Justify who commanded everyone’s attention when making his first local appearance shortly after the track re-opened at 8:45 a.m. following the renovation break.
