Triple Crown winner: Whirlaway

Twelve horses have won the American Triple Crown – composed of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes – which was patterned after the English Triple Crown that dates to 1809. When Sir Barton won the three races in 1919, it was not considered a Triple Crown feat. The three races were not acknowledged as being tied together as the Triple Crown until the 1930s.

Justify, with trainer Bob Baffert, got a Preakness Beyer Speed Figure of 97, the slowest Preakness Beyer Figure since 1991.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Triple Crown hopeful Justify went a quick half-mile Tuesday morning at Churchill Downs in his first breeze since his Preakness Stakes victory as the superstar colt continues to please his Hall of Fame trainer, Bob Baffert.

Amid a light rain and with Martin Garcia in from California to ride him, Justify went a half-mile in 46.80 seconds before going out five furlongs in 59.60, according to Churchill clocker John Nichols.

Afterward, Baffert was all smiles.
