Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint: Clement, Miller, Servis well armed

Trainers Christophe Clement, Peter Miller, and Jason Servis could have multiple starters in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint when the 5 1/2-furlong race is held Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs.

Clement may start Disco Partner and Pure Sensation. He is pointing the duo for the $150,000 Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational, a six-furlong race Oct. 6.

Miller and Servis could have three starters each.

First Stronach 5 on Friday

The Stronach 5 wager begins Friday with races from Laurel Park, Santa Anita, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields.

Laurel Park will serve as the betting hub for the $1 minimum wager, which will have a 12 percent takeout, as all pick fives do in Maryland. The Stronach 5 will be held each Friday through Nov. 2.

If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will carry over to the next week. In the case of a surface change, all horses in that leg of the wager will be considered winners.

The second edition of the Real Rider Cup, a charity jumping competition that features racing personalities aboard ex-racehorses, had an entirely new lineup this year, but once again the individual winner came from the world of steeplechasing. Just like the 2017 winner, Mark Beecher, perennial leading steeplechase trainer Jack Fisher was the first rider on course and jumped clear in a time that no one could beat.

Four racing fatalities in one week at Churchill

Four horses suffered fatal racing injuries over the previous week of racing at Churchill Downs in Louisville, state racing regulators confirmed on Tuesday, a statistical abnormality that has led regulators to closely examine the cases as the Breeders’ Cup event at Churchill approaches.

The breakdowns occurred one each on the four days of racing held Sept. 20-23. The bodies of all four horses are currently being necropsied, according to state racing regulators, who are attempting to find evidence for any common causes or factors that could be countered.

Jessica Krupnick wins overall MATCH title

Jessica Krupnick wins the Dashing Beauty Stakes earlier this summer at Delaware Park.

Jessica Krupnick held on to win the overall title in the Mid-Atlantic Championships on Saturday over Laki, who finished second in the Grade 3 De Francis Memorial Dash at Laurel Park. If Laki would have won the De Francis, he would have been the overall champion by one point.

Jessica Krupnick, a 5-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo, is based at the Fair Hill Training Center with trainer Tres Abbott. She is owned by the Sycamore Racing V partnership, which is managed by Abbott’s father, Francis.

Del Mar raises purses for fall meeting

Overnight purses will rise approximately 5 percent at the Del Mar autumn meeting, according to the track’s racing department, while the stakes program remains largely unchanged. The meeting runs from Nov. 9-Dec. 2.

Overnight purses at the meet range from $18,000 for $8,000 claimers to $75,000 for overnight stakes. In all, 20 of the 26 purse categories have been increased compared to last year’s autumn meeting. The increases range from $1,000 to $4,000.

Alvarado to miss at least a week after spill

ELMONT, N.Y. – Jockey Junior Alvarado will miss at least one week of riding as a result of the spill in which he was involved during Friday’s sixth race at Belmont Park.

Since Alvarado was semi-unconscious after falling from Sword Fighter at the top of the stretch in a six-furlong turf allowance race, Alvarado needs a letter from a neurologist clearing him to ride, according to Steve Lewandowski, steward for the New York State Gaming Commission.

Perry Ouzts boots home win No. 7,000

Perry Ouzts became just the ninth jockey in North American racing history to win 7,000 races when he booted home heavily favored Emmy’s Candy in the third race Friday at Belterra Park in Cincinnati.

Afterward, Ouzts and his friends and family celebrated the milestone with a presentation in the winner's circle. Among those congratulating Ouzts were his fellow Belterra riders, as well as Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day, who retired in 2005 and is the fourth-winningest rider with 8,803 wins.

New Mexico to consider applications for final racino license

The New Mexico Racing Commission will conduct three public hearings concerning applications for the state’s sixth and final available license for a racetrack that has a casino.

There are five applicants for the license, according to commission representative Rosemary Garley.

Real Rider Cup charity jumping event returns Sunday

The Real Rider Cup, a charity jumping challenge that brings together Thoroughbred racing and three-day eventing, will return for the second year to the Plantation Field International Horse Trials in Unionville, Pa., on Sunday.

A new cast of racing celebrities will be featured, including television commentators Gabby Gaudet and Maggie Wolfendale Morley, six-time leading steeplechase trainer Jack Fisher, and five-time champion steeplechase jockey Paddy Young.
