Injury ends Ransom the Moon's racing career

ARCADIA, Calif. - The three-time graded stakes winner Ransom the Moon will miss the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs on Nov. 3 and has been retired because of a pastern injury

Trainer Phil D’Amato said Friday that the injury was detected Thursday after a review of radiographs by several veterinarians. Ransom the Moon was scheduled to have his final start in the BC Sprint before going to stud at Calumet Farm.

D’Amato said Ransom the Moon will be sent to Calumet in coming days.

New Jersey sees jump in sports-betting handle

Sports wagering in New Jersey jumped significantly during September, a predictable increase given the start of the NFL football season, with the state’s two racetracks capturing the equivalent of approximately 40 percent of the market share, according to figures released Monday by the New Jersey Gaming and Enforcement Board.

Total handle on sports during the month was $183.95 million, with the majority share, $104.9 million, placed through online or mobile applications, according to the figures. The September figure was nearly double the amount bet on sports in August.

Rosario to ride Jaywalk in Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies

Joel Rosario, who has ridden four of the eight runners aiming to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, will stay with Frizette winner Jaywalk in the Breeders’ Cup. Irad Ortiz has picked up the mount from Rosario on Spinaway winner Sippican Harbor.

Noted newspaper handicapper Jack Karlik dies at 85

Jack Karlik, a prominent newspaper handicapper whose career spanned more than 40 years for Southern California publications including Daily Racing Form and Pasadena Star-News, died Sunday at an assisted care facility in Los Angeles. He was 85.

Karlik began his career at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. He spent 20 years at Daily Racing Form, where his selections were published under the name “Sweep.” In 1983, Karlik became lead handicapper for the Star-News and affiliates, where he stayed for nearly 25 years until his retirement.

Breeders' Cup to unveil documentary series featuring top contenders

The Breeders’ Cup will debut a seven-part documentary series later this month featuring horses who are being pointed to this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic and their connections, the company announced on Saturday.

The first episode of the series, called “All In: The Road to the Classic,” will debut on Oct. 22 on Facebook Watch, the Breeders’ Cup said, with additional episodes becoming available over “the following days.” The Classic, the richest race over the two-day Breeders’ Cup event, is scheduled for Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

Cookie Dough opened up to win the Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl division by 7 1/2 lengths Saturday.

Cookie Dough will target the Grade 3 Tempted Stakes on Nov. 2 at Aqueduct rather than the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies the same day at Churchill Downs, Arindel racing manager Brian Cohen said Friday.

Cookie Dough scored a 7 1/2-length victory in the $400,000 My Dear Girl Stakes on Sept. 29 at Gulfstream Park, after breaking from post 12 in the 1 1/16-mile race. What seemed like a good idea at the time soon gave way to realistic expectations.

Meadowlands cancels Friday night card due to rain

After steady overnight rain in northern New Jersey, the Friday night Thoroughbred card at The Meadowlands has been canceled. This is the second cancellation at the six-night all-turf Monmouth-at-Meadowlands meet, which will conclude Saturday.

Sunny weather is expected to move into the region Friday afternoon and continue Saturday, so hopefully the closing-night card will be held. The turf is likely to be less than firm.
