Tacitus declared from Breeders' Cup Classic, will return in 2020

Debra A. Roma
In his last two races, Tacitus had a wide trip in the Belmont Stakes and stumbled at the start of the Jim Dandy.

Tacitus, third most recently in the Jockey Club Gold Cup behind Code of Honor and Vino Rosso, will get the rest of the year off and will miss the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita, trainer Bill Mott said Tuesday.

Tacitus is scheduled to remain in training next year at age 4.

"We're going to give him some time, let him grow," said Mott, who trains Tacitus, a colt by Tapit, for his owner and breeder, Juddmonte Farms.

World of Trouble retired a year earlier than planned

Barbara D. Livingston
World of Trouble changed surfaces for the Twin Spires Turf Sprint after winning the Grade 1 Carter Handicap on dirt April 6.

World of Trouble, a Grade 1 winner on both dirt and turf this year, has been retired and will enter stud at Hill 'n' Dale Farm a year earlier than planned.

Hill 'n' Dale announced in June that it had acquired the rights to the 4-year-old colt, who was campaigned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, and Bethlehem Stables, and said that the partnership would continue to race the horse through 2020. However, the son of Hill 'n' Dale stallion Kantharos was sidelined over the summer, and with the Breeders' Cup and other major targets off the table, it was opted to retire him.

Arlington Park received approval for a 68-day 2020 race schedule Tuesday.

CHICAGO – The bomb dropped last week at the annual Illinois Racing Board dates awards meeting turned out to be a dud.

After essentially threatening to pull Arlington’s racetrack operator’s license at its Sept. 17 dates-award meeting and convening a special committee to investigate Churchill Downs Inc.’s decision not to apply for a casino license at Arlington, the IRB on Tuesday unanimously approved the 2020 racing schedule that had been submitted before the regularly scheduled meeting.

Maximum Security will be forced to scratch from Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby at Parx and will most likely miss the Breeders’ Cup as well after suffering from a severe case of colic and a displacement of the large colon, trainer Jason Servis said Tuesday.

On Monday afternoon, a few hours after returning to Monmouth Park from Parx, where he had shipped by van for a workout over the main track, Maximum Security was rushed to the Mid-Atlantic Equine Clinic in Ringoes, N.J., where he was diagnosed and treated by Dr. Janik Gasiorowski.
