Beshear elected Kentucky governor but could face recount

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear, a Democrat who campaigned in part on a pledge to push for casino gambling, narrowly won the state’s gubernatorial election Tuesday, defeating the anti-gambling incumbent Matt Bevin, but the close outcome may lead to a recount or more, and anti-gambling forces remain in control of the state’s legislature.

Thunder Snow, two-time Dubai World Cup winner, retired

Thunder Snow, the only horse to win the Dubai World Cup in consecutive years, has been retired from racing and will go to stud in 2020, though stallion plans haven’t yet been announced, according to the website of his owner, Godolphin Racing.

Thunder Snow last started in the Metropolitan Handicap in early June, finishing a fine third, but was unable to keep to a planned American campaign over the summer, scratching from an anticipated start in the Whitney at Saratoga, and eventually was taken home to trainer Saeed bin Suroor’s base in England.

Kentucky Commission gives Churchill Downs Inc. approval to install 5,500 historical racing machines

LEXINGTON, Ky. - After avoiding historical horse racing machines for years, Churchill Downs Inc. is suddenly interested. Very interested.

On Tuesday, the company received approval from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to install up to 2,500 of the devices, which are remarkably similar to slot machines, at Turfway Park in northern Kentucky, a track it purchased just one month ago. In addition, the KHRC approved the installation of up to 3,000 of the devices between Derby City Gaming, a casino Churchill owns in Louisville, and Churchill Downs itself.

N.Y. Gaming Commission approves rule change regarding corticosteroids

The New York Gaming Commission on Monday approved a proposal that would extend a ban on the intra-articular administration of a class of medications from seven days prior to a race to 14 days.

The approval will move the proposal into a 60-day public comment period. Under the proposal, no corticosteroids could be administered to a horse within two weeks of a race.

Zayat, Rodriguez in debt dispute

An auction of two horses trained by Rudy Rodriguez and owned by Ahmed Zayat’s family stable may not go ahead as planned following discussions of a negotiated agreement to satisfy the trainer’s claims of unpaid debts, according to both sides in the dispute.

The auction of the two horses, Lezendary and Majid, was announced in a notice that ran in Friday’s edition of Daily Racing Form. The auction was scheduled for Nov. 1 at Belmont Park “by virtue of default in payments” by Zayat Stables, the owner of the two horses, according to the notice.
