The California Horse Racing Board followed all of its procedures when adjudicating cases last year involving the eventual Triple Crown winner Justify and six other horses that tested positive for a regulated substance, the board’s chairman at the time, Chuck Winner, said in a statement released on Thursday afternoon.

Delaware commission upholds Vitali suspension

The Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission has upheld a one-year suspension levied against trainer Marcus Vitali by the stewards at Delaware Park, according to commission officials.

The commission voted to uphold the suspension after a five-hour appeals hearing, according to the commission’s executive director, John Wayne. The commission had earlier refused to issue a stay of the suspension pending the appeals hearing.

Hall of Fame jockey Randy Romero, who fought numerous ailments for decades during and after a sensational riding career, died early Thursday at his home in Lafayette, La. He was 61.

Romero had been battling kidney and liver disease even before his retirement, which came in 1999 after 4,294 winners and $75 million in mount earnings. Further beset by cancer in recent years, Romero had been in hospice care at his home since June.

Hollendorfer contests Golden Gate ban in court

Jerry Hollendorfer has filed an action against Golden Gate Fields in Northern California contesting the track’s decision to ban him from racing at that track. The Hall of Fame trainer won a ruling last month that lifted a similar ban at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

Noose, who ran second in the Saratoga Special, has been renamed Scabbard.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Noose, the horse who ran second in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special on Saturday in his second start, has been renamed Scabbard, The Jockey Club and the colt’s owner confirmed on Wednesday.

Joseph Sutton, the colt’s owner and breeder, said in an interview that The Jockey Club contacted him early this week and recommended that the name be changed, based on criticism that the name was racially insensitive.

“I don’t want to offend anyone, anywhere, at any time,” Sutton said. “The smart thing to do was to change the name.”
