Pounced gives Gosden Cup repeat

Barbara D. Livingston
Pounced, ridden by Frankie Dettori, prevails by three-quarters of a length.

ARCADIA, Calif. - History repeated itself in splendid fashion for trainer John Gosden in Saturday's at Santa Anita as Pounced split horses in upper stretch and ran down a stubborn pacesetter Bridgetown to win the $1 million race by three-quarters of a length.

Bridgetown held second by a head over Interactif, who finished a half-length in front of Awesome Act.

Last year, also at Santa Anita, Gosden won the Juvenile Turf with Donativum.

"I was asked before how did he relate to the horse last year," Gosden said. "I said he's of similar profile."

Life Is Sweet proved as fine as Shirreffs thought

Barbara D. Livingston
Life Is Sweet wraps up a last-to-first Ladies' Classic victory as her jockey, Garrett Gomez, exults.

ARCADIA, Calif. - The blankets presented to the winning horses of the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic of both 2008 and 2009 hung over the outer railing at the Santa Anita barn being occupied by trainer John Shirreffs on Saturday morning, testament to the victories last year by Zenyatta and Friday by Life Is Sweet in the feature race of Day 1 of the two-day Breeders' Cup.

The victory by Life Is Sweet, Shirreffs said, was satisfying, because it gave notice to a filly who has raced in Zenyatta's shadow all year, but who Shirreffs believes is top-class in her own right.

Zenyatta gets off her trailer Wednesday at Santa Anita to settle in for her Classic start.

ARCADIA, Calif. - In the 26 years that the Breeders' Cup Classic has been run, the $5 million edition on Saturday at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting might have the most eclectic field.

Want to beat Zensational? Catch him

Barbara D. Livingston
Zensational, training this week at Santa Anita, will break from the rail for the third straight time in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. "Obviously, we'll have to send him out of there and let him roll early," said trainer Bob Baffert.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Trainer Bob Baffert has won the last two renewals of the Breeders' Cup Sprint with Midnight Lute, who exploded from the back of the pack to capture the event in 2007 at Monmouth Park and again last year at Santa Anita. On Saturday, Baffert will attempt to win an unprecedented third straight Sprint with Zensational, a freakishly fast 3-year-old whose game plan is simple: Catch me if you can.

Boy, was he right.

Making her first start outside of Europe, Midday ($6.60) rallied along the inside in the stretch to win Friday's at Santa Anita.
