Breeders' Cup prospects get in Southern California workouts

ARCADIA, Calif. - Bob Baffert and Steve Asmussen, whose runners dominated the Breeders' Cup work tab at Santa Anita on Sunday, were back for more on Monday morning, with such big names as Contested, Fed Biz, and Unbridled's Note putting in their next-to-last works on a fast main track for upcoming Breeders' Cup races.

Contested, who is heading to the Filly and Mare Sprint, sped five furlongs in 59 seconds, the second-fastest time of 50 at the distance on Monday.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Ever since Royal Delta’s devastating 9 1/2-length victory in the Grade 1 Beldame Invitational here Sept. 29, her connections have been focused on defending her title in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic at Santa Anita.

On Monday, owner Benjamin Leon and trainer Bill Mott gave themselves the option to change their mind.

ELMONT, N.Y. -   The rain was long gone and the main track had dried out nicely and was very fast but the majority of activity from potential Breeders’ Cup starters still came over the training track on a cool but beautiful Sunday morning at Belmont Park.

ELMONT, N.Y. - One undefeated champion and three unbeaten Eclipse Award contenders highlighted the work tab Sunday morning at Belmont Park as horses continued preparation for the upcoming Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita.

 Awesome Feather, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2010 who is undefeated in 10 career starts, worked six furlongs in 1:12.22 over Belmont’s main track. She is preparing for a meeting with champions Royal Delta and My Miss Aurelia in the $2 million Ladies’ Classic on Nov. 2.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The countdown to the Breeders’ Cup kicked into a higher gear at Santa Anita on Saturday morning, as two dozen prospects for the 15 BC races here Nov. 2 and 3 worked, including such notable names as BC winners Amazombie and California Flag, trainer Dale Romans’s murderer’s row of Dullahan, Little Mike, and Shackleford, and six Todd Pletcher trainees, the most impressive being Love and Pride.

Breeders' Cup: It's Tricky comes out of Belmont Park work with an injury and is retired

It's Tricky was not an easy horse to train but Kiaran McLaughlin developed her into a multiple Grade 1 winner.

ELMONT, N.Y. – It’s Tricky, the quirky multiple Grade 1 winner, suffered an injury to her hind ankle and has been retired, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said Saturday.

She had been pointing to a start in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.

McLaughlin said that It’s Tricky came out of a Thursday workout at Belmont Park with the beginnings of a condylar fracture to her right hind ankle. She will not need surgery.

“She will be retired and sent home,” said McLaughlin, who trained It’s Tricky for Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin Racing.

Breeders' Cup Mile: Woodbine Mile runner-up Hunters Bay has foot bruise, will be freshened

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Hunters Bay, who has been battling a foot bruise which he suffered during his second-place finish in the Woodbine Mile, will not be making the trip to Santa Annita for the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

“He’s almost perfect, but you obviously need to be perfect to tackle Wise Dan,” said Reade Baker, who trains the Kentucky-homebred 5-year-old Hunters Bay for Frank Stronach.
