Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf: Europeans hold strong hand

Barbara D. Livingston
Watsdachances is one of the top U.S.-based contenders in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

A European shipper has yet to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, but the drought could end in the fifth running of the race Nov. 2, when a host of runners from across the pond participate.

In all, 18 horses were pre-entered in the one-mile event, which went with a 12-horse field in the first two runnings of the race at Santa Anita. The first seven get in on points, and the others gain inclusion through the selection committee. Renee’s Queen is cross-entered with her first preference in the Juvenile Fillies

Jerardi: Searching for those elusive Breeders' Cup singles

Benoit & Associates
Game On Dude will be favored in the Breeders' Cup Classic, he's undefeated on the Santa Anita track, and he's posted seven triple-digit Beyers in a row. But is he a single?

Went through the Breeders’ Cup pre-entries once quickly just to see if anything jumped off the page. Went through them again more slowly just to get a general feel for each race. Will go through them next looking for potential race shapes and how that might affect outcomes. This weekend, I will go through each race, watching videos of every contender and some not-so-obvious contenders.

Nates Mineshaft has not raced since finishing third in the Stephen Foster in June.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Nates Mineshaft, who recently was transferred to California and to trainer Richard Mandella, will miss the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and will be off indefinitely, Mandella said Tuesday.

“We found a problem and he needs time off, so we sent him home,” said Mandella, who declined to elaborate on the nature of the injury. “We’ll give him a little rest and try to get him back late next year.”

Kentucky notes: Groupie Doll caps McKee's eventful weekend

Barbara D. Livingston
Groupie Doll worked five furlongs in 59.60 at Churchill Downs on Sunday. She is bound for the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint

LEXINGTON, Ky. - It was an unforgettable weekend for jockey John McKee. On Friday, he and his wife, Shelly, had their first child, a boy named Max. On Saturday, McKee was thrown hard to the Keeneland Polytrack when his mount in the fourth race, Save the World, broke down.

On Sunday morning, with X-rays having proven negative for what initially was believed to be a broken hand, McKee was aboard Groupie Doll at Churchill when the star filly had another workout toward the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.
