Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint: Everyone has a shot in oversubscribed race

Coady Photography
Bridgetown, on left winning the Woodford Stakes at Keeneland, may not be suited by the unique downhill layout of Santa Anita's turf course.

Handicappers expecting to come up with the winner of the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint may be disappointed to find that Daily Racing Form past performances don’t come with a decoder ring, Ouija board, or Magic 8 Ball.

That’s because there are far more questions than there are answers when it comes to assessing the chances of many of the contenders in this race, which drew 17 pre-entries, only 14 of which will be allowed to start. For instance: What happened to Starspangledbanner in that last race in France, where he finished last of 11?

Breeders' Cup Mile: Wise Dan, Excelebration matchup worth price of admission

Barbara D. Livingston
Wise Dan can prove himself against world-class competition when he faces Excelebration in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

There were no major surprises when a list of 13 pre-entered horses in the Breeders’ Cup Mile was revealed Wednesday. And that’s just fine. The matchup between Wise Dan and Excelebration alone makes the BC Mile must-see racing. Add to that intriguing inter-continental showdown the 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom as well as top French filly Moonlight Cloud and the Mile should be memorable.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies: Only nine pre-entered - and five are cross-entered

Shigeki Kikkawa
Undefeated Executiveprivilege has been the odds-on favorite in all five of her career starts.

The $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies could go with its shortest field in history Nov.  2 at Santa Anita, as five of the nine horses pre-entered Monday were cross-entered in other BC stakes.

Breeders' Cup Turf: Point of Entry gives America a strong contender

Tom Keyser
Point of Entry has won the the Man o’ War, Sword Dancer Invitational, and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (above).

This may be the year the Breeders’ Cup Turf trophy stays in the United States for a change.

European-based runners have won the last four, and six of the last seven runnings of the nation’s richest grass race. For the $3 million BC Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 3, the New York-based colt Point of Entry will be favored to keep the prize at home.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf draws 19 pre-entries, led by seven Europeans

Barbara D. Livingston
Noble Tune is one of two Juvenile Turf pre-entrants from trainer Chad Brown.

With 19 pre-entered, the Juvenile Turf attracted more pre-entries than any other 2012 Breeders’ Cup event, followed by the Juvenile Fillies Turf, with 18, and the Turf Sprint, with 17 pre-entries. And the Juvenile Turf, a one-mile race with a purse of $1 million, also attracted more European pre-entrants than any other of this year’s Breeders’ Cup events with seven. European runners have won three of the first five runnings of the Juvenile Turf. As with all Breeders’ Cup races, the Juvenile Turf field will be capped at 14.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: Baffert has three set to take on Amazombie

Shigeki Kikkawa
Amazombie wins the Bing Crosby under his regular rider, Mike Smith, at Del Mar in his most recent start.

With no clear-cut leader in the division, a full field of 14 appears likely to go postward in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, which oversubscribed when 16 horses were pre-entered for the race Monday. Among those pre-entered were defending Sprint champion Amazombie along with a trio of top contenders from the barn of trainer Bob Baffert.

Michael Amoruso
Champagne winner Shanghai Bobby will try to become the first East Coast-based horse to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita.

Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic: Royal Delta among 7 Grade 1 winners likely to start

Benoit & Associates
Martin Garcia rode Love and Pride to this victory in the Grade 1 Zenyatta Stakes, but John Velazquez will be aboard in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Royal Delta will run in a Breeders’ Cup race next week at Santa Anita. The question is – what race?

Royal Delta is the early favorite in an outstanding field pre-entered in the $2 million Ladies’ Classic on Nov. 2. But she also was pre-entered in the BC Classic on Nov. 3, allowing for a possibility of facing colts and geldings for a $5 million purse.

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf: Top contenders are all European

Shigeki Kikkawa
Marketing Mix, winning the Rodeo Drive Stakes, may be the best American hope in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

After European dominance in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf throughout much of the last decade, North American-based runners have shined in recent years, with Shared Account winning in 2010 for America and Perfect Shirl in 2011 for Canada.

If North American-based horses are to three-peat this year, it will require an upset, just as in 2010 and 2011. Of the 13 horses pre-entered for the Nov. 2 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, five have raced mostly in Europe this year, and all are leading contenders, led by Group 1 winners The Fugue and Ridasiyna.

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile likely to draw a shorter field

Michael Burns
Delegation, winner of the Durham Cup, was a somewhat surprising entry in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

A few mild surprises were in store for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile when pre-entries were revealed Wednesday, including a couple of unexpected absences and a few whose names had scarcely been mentioned.
