LEXINGTON, Ky. – All the major players from an incredibly eventful Saturday of stakes racing at Keeneland were reported in good order Sunday morning, with the camps of a pair of vanquished champions, Wise Dan and Groupie Doll, saying they already are putting the disappointments behind them while looking forward to the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita.

In the days leading to the L.A. Woman Stakes, Ellis said that Teddy’s Promise had thrived during a break of 2 1/2 months since mid-summer. She showed how on Saturday.

Belmont Park: Havana holds on to win Champagne Stakes

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Todd Pletcher continued his mastery of the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes, and he hopes to continue his recent string of success in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in four weeks.

Havana, stretching out from a 5 1/2-furlong maiden race at Saratoga to a one-mile stakes against a quality field of 2-year-olds, held off a late charge from Honor Code to win the $500,000 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park by a neck. The win earned Havana a fees-paid berth to the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita on Nov. 2.

Belmont Park: Artemis Agrotera defeats game Sweet Reason in Frizette

ELMONT, N.Y. – Sweet Reason may have earned more respect in defeat Saturday at Belmont Park than she did in winning her first two starts at Saratoga.

After veering in sharply while breaking from the rail in Saturday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Frizette Stakes, Sweet Reason rallied to finish second, 1 1/4 lengths behind the New York-bred Artemis Agrotera. Sweet Reason finished 2 3/4 lengths ahead of Stopchargingmaria in third.

Santa Anita: No Jet Lag enters Breeders' Cup picture by upsetting City of Hope Mile

ARCADIA, Calif. - No Jet Lag, making his graded stakes debut, scored an upset win in Saturday’s $150,750 City of Hope Mile at Santa Anita, outfinishing the heavily favored Obviously, who ran fourth.

The win led trainer Simon Callaghan to suggest that No Jet Lag would be pointed for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile on Nov. 2, a race that could include Obviously, the 1-2 favorite on Saturday.

“We can consider him for the Breeders’ Cup Mile,” Callaghan said. “He’s a talented horse and he’s got an enormous amount of speed. It was not a surprise to us that he won today.”

LEXINGTON, Ky. – We Miss Artie stormed down the track to take Saturday’s $400,000 Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity, capping a sensational opening two days at Keeneland for sire Artie Schiller, whose progeny won the track’s two Grade 1 races for 2-year-olds in as many days.

In addition to We Miss Artie, a colt, the filly My Conquestadory won the opening-day Alcibiades. Like My Conquestadory, We Miss Artie won by shifting from turf to Polytrack, and with a powerful closing punch.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The strange weather that descended Saturday on Keeneland paralleled the results of the track’s richest day of racing when Silver Max stunned what remained of a crowd of 27,849 by upsetting Wise Dan in front-running fashion in the $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile, a Grade 1 race transferred to the main Polytrack surface because of weather conditions.

Woodbine: Mazarine win makes Madly Truly a Breeders' Cup candidate

Madly Truly could be headed to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies after winning the Grade 3 Mazarine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Madly Truly gave trainer Mark Casse another prospect for the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday at Woodbine, when she rallied strongly as the favorite to take the Grade 3 Mazarine Stakes under Patrick Husbands.

Morant Bay opened up a sizable lead on the backstretch in the 1 1/16-mile route for 2-year-old fillies. She set quick fractions, while Madly Truly bided her time in fourth along the inside.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Judy the Beauty, third behind champion Groupie Doll in the Presque Isle Masters on Sept. 9, got the better of that rival and four others in registering an upset in the Grade 2, $200,000 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes on Saturday at Keeneland.

With John Velazquez aboard for the first time, Judy the Beauty rated in fifth early behind a moderate pace set by Gypsy Robin, the eventual runner-up, as that one covered the first quarter-mile in 22.67 seconds in the six-furlong dash on Polytrack.
