Keeneland: Richies Party Girl has experience edge in Jessamine

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Wesley Ward had a sensational opening weekend at Keeneland and could continue his roll Wednesday with Richie's Party Girl.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Wesley Ward enjoyed a sensational opening weekend at Keeneland, and not just as a horse trainer.

Ward not only trains but also is listed as the sole owner of Judy the Beauty, the winner of the $200,000 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes on Saturday, meaning the only thing Ward had to subtract from the $120,000 winner’s share was the standard 10 percent jockey’s commission to John Velazquez.

Moreover, the Grade 2 TCA carried a Win and You’re In bonus toward the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: Sum of the Parts set to flaunt his speed

Coady Photography
Sum of the Parts, ridden by Leandro Goncalves, wins the Grade 3 Phoenix at Keeneland - his first victory since last year's Phoenix.

When the summer began, trainer Tom Amoss had the No. 1-rated sprinter in the country in Delaunay, a former claimer who capped off a six-race winning streak with an easy victory in the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Sprint. But when Amoss returns to Santa Anita next month for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, he’ll return with a familiar face, the speedy Sum of the Parts, who earned his way into the Sprint the same way he did a year ago, with a victory last Friday in the Win and You’re In Grade 3 Phoenix at Keeneland.

Santa Anita: Clenor makes it three straight in Surfer Girl

Benoit & Associates
Under Rafael Bejarano, Clenor was able to show improved positional speed in her Surfer Girl score on Sunday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Clenor extended her winning streak to three races in Sunday’s $101,250 Surfer Girl Stakes on turf at Santa Anita, showing a slight change in her running style that could be a benefit for her next start in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 1.

Instead of closing from the back of the field, Clenor was in the middle of the 10-filly field in the Surfer Girl for the first half-mile. Clenor ($3.40) rallied from sixth under Rafael Bejarano, about five lengths off the pace, before taking the lead in the final furlong.

In the Grade 3, $200,000 Pilgrim Stakes for colts and geldings, a stalking Bobby’s Kitten romped to a 6 1/4-length victory over the late-running Shadow Banking, also trained by Brown.

The gray Poker Player (left) pulls a 23-1 upset under Channing Hill in the Bourbon Stakes on Sunday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Neither rain nor a drop in temperature at Keeneland could cool off trainer Wayne Catalano, one of the hottest trainers in North America in recent weeks. Amid dreary weather, Catalano was a winner again Sunday when Poker Player rallied for a 23-1 upset in the 23rd running of the Grade 3, $150,000 Bourbon Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile race transferred from turf to the main Polytrack surface because of the weather.

Santa Anita: No Jet Lag raises the bar with City of Hope win

Benoit & Associates
No Jet Lag, ridden by Mike Smith, will move on to the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile after upsetting the City of Hope Mile.

ARCADIA, Calif. - On Labor Day weekend, No Jet Lag was omitted from the $250,000 Del Mar Derby because of insufficient career earnings. What really stung trainer Simon Callaghan was that the race was divided into two divisions, and No Jet Lag still couldn’t get in from the also-eligible list.

Five weeks later, No Jet Lag ran in the next possible turf stakes, Saturday’s $150,750 City of Hope Mile Stakes on turf. The opportunity was not wasted. No Jet Lag gave a career-best performance to win by a half-length.

Longchamp: Moonlight Cloud storms home to win Prix de la Foret

As flashy as Treve looked winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Sunday, Moonlight Cloud might have been her equal winning the Group 1 Prix de la Foret 1 1/2 hours later.
