OCEANPORT, N.J. – The Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park has drawn a small group with some big accomplishments.
Nyquist and Exaggerator finished one-two in the Kentucky Derby and accounted for the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Gun Runner finished third in the Derby after winning the Louisiana Derby. And, then there is the up-and-coming American Freedom, who is trained by Bob Baffert, winner of five of the last six Haskells and a record eight overall.
Highland Reel had won a major race in North America, the Grade 1 Secretariat, and in Asia, where he captured the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase, and on Saturday he took down one of the most prestigious prizes in Europe when leading all the way under Ryan Moore in the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.
Highland Reel gave Aidan O’Brien his fourth King George win and earned an automatic fees-paid berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Win and You’re In program, a berth he is likely to accept if all goes well through season’s end.
DEL MAR, Calif. – Toowindytohaulrox ended his 2015 campaign with two surprising finishes – a third at 48-1 in the Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar and a win at 21-1 in the Grade 3 Daytona Stakes on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita.
They were not flukes, trainer Phil D’Amato insists.
The third in the Seabiscuit Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on turf has left D’Amato encouraged about Toowindytohaulrox’s appearance in Saturday’s $75,000 Wickerr Stakes at a mile on turf at Del Mar.
A dozen years ago, the Little Red Feather partnership won the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Lone Star Park with Singletary.
The same race is a goal this fall at Santa Anita with Midnight Storm, the winner of the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile on June 4. In the interim, there are lucrative races to try.
Midnight Storm will have his first start of the summer in the $250,000 Eddie Read Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Del Mar next Sunday.
ARCADIA, Calif. – More than a year after he played a supporting role in the Triple Crown, Firing Line is ready for his 2016 debut in a second-level optional $62,500 claimer at Santa Anita on Saturday. Owner Arnold Zetcher and trainer Simon Callaghan are hopeful that the one-mile race will propel Firing Line into the nation’s leading races in the second half of the year.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Spelling Again earned herself an all-expenses-paid trip to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint after holding off a hard-luck Cali Star to register a neck decision in Saturday’s $250,000 Princess Rooney at Gulfstream Park.
The Grade 2 Princess Rooney shared top billing with the Grade 2 Smile on Saturday’s rich Summit of Speed program. Both races are designated as Win and You’re In events for the 2016 Breeders’ Cup.
Minding won her third Group 1 race in the last two months with an easy victory in Sunday’s $279,375 Pretty Polly Stakes for fillies and mares at The Curragh in Ireland.
Sent off at 1-5 in a field of five, Minding caught pacesetter Bocca Baciata, a 25-1 shot, in the final furlong and won by 4 1/2 lengths. Bocca Baciata held second in the race at 1 1/4 miles on turf, finishing five lengths clear of 14-1 Lucida.
ARCADIA, Calif. - Melatonin was 16-1 when he won the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap in March in his first stakes win. Melatonin won his second stakes in Saturday’s $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita as the 9-5 favorite.
The Gold Cup at Santa Anita may have had half the purse as the Big Cap, but was arguably more valuable. With the victory, Melatonin earned a fees-paid berth to the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic here on Nov. 5 through the Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In program.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – While Gulfstream Park-based fillies such as Best Behavior, Kiss to Remember, Cali Star, and My Miss Venezuela can claim home-field advantage going into next Saturday’s Princess Rooney Stakes, none can boast a better local record than Birdatthewire, who is expected to ship down from Kentucky for the Grade 2 event.
