Obviously may run just once before Breeders' Cup Mile

ARCADIA, Calif. - Obviously ended a two-year losing streak with a sharp win in the $300,000 Poker Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday, a victory that left trainer Phil D’Amato in no hurry to plan another race.

D’Amato watched the Grade 3 Poker Stakes from his base in California on Saturday. He said Obviously may start one more time before an intended run in the Breeders’ Cup Mile here at Santa Anita on Nov. 5. Obviously has started in the Breeders’ Cup Mile the last four years with his best finish a third in 2012. He was ninth in the 2015 BC Mile at Keeneland.

Bradester proves uncatchable in Stephen Foster Handicap

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bradester seized early command and never looked back in posting a 9-1 upset Saturday night in the 35th running of the Grade 1, $500,000 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs.

With Joe Bravo aboard, Bradester repelled a sustained bid by his race-long chaser, Majestic Harbor, before finishing a half-length ahead of late-running Eagle. Majestic Harbor was just another neck back in third, while Effinex, the 3-5 favorite and 122-pound highweight, was a huge disappointment when sixth.

Paid Up Subscriber outperforms favorites in Fleur de Lis

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Paid Up Subscriber became a player in the filly-and-mare division and earned an expenses-paid trip to the Breeders’ Cup with an emphatic victory Saturday night in the 41st running of the Grade 2, $200,000 Fleur de Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs.

Ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr., Paid Up Subscriber rallied from just off the pace to win the 1 1/8-mile race by three lengths over Brooklynsway, returning $14.60 after finishing in 1:48.44 over a fast track.

Melatonin, Hard Aces among eight probable for Gold Cup

Melatonin will be a prime contender in the June 25 Gold Cup, a Win and You're In event for the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Melatonin and Hard Aces, the first two finishers of the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap, are among eight projected starters for the $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita next Saturday.

The race is expected to be comprised of California-based runners, including Bal a Bali, Follow Me Crev, Imperative, Lieutenant Colonel, Second Summer, and Win the Space.

Breeders' Cup raises entry fees for all 13 races

Breeders’ Cup has raised the entry fees for the 13 races it holds over its two-day event, with most of the fees increasing by 50 percent.

Entry fees for 11 of the 13 races will rise from 2 percent of the purse to 3 percent, according to Dora Delgado, the Breeders’ Cup’s senior vice president of racing and nominations. The entry fees for the Classic and the Turf will go from 2 percent of the purse to 2.5 percent, Delgado said.

ARCADIA, Calif.- Midnight Storm will have a light campaign in advance of the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita on Nov. 5.

Midnight Storm earned a fees-paid berth to the BC Mile with a victory in the $400,345 Shoemaker Mile on turf at Santa Anita on Saturday. The race was part of the Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In program, offering a fees-paid berth for the winner to the BC Mile.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Midnight Storm’s first five appearances in Grade 1 races ended in losses, ranging from a game second in the 2015 Shoemaker Mile to a last-place finish in the Pacific Classic last August.

There was no such disappointment in Saturday’s $400,345 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita. Midnight Storm ($11.20) took command of the turf race shortly after the start and held off a stubborn rival in the Kentucky shipper Tourist to win the most prestigious race of his career.
