Barbara D. Livingston

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Among trainers in Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf history, Chad Brown now stands alone at the top.

At Churchill Downs in the Grade 1, $2 million Filly and Mare Turf on Saturday, he recorded his fourth victory in the race when Sistercharlie wore down favored Wild Illusion. This resulted in Brown passing three-time winner Michael Stoute, with whom he had been tied.

City of Light dominant in Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

Julie Wright
City of Light draws clear for a 2 3/4-length victory in Saturday's Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – This was the moment trainer Michael McCarthy had spent seemingly his whole life waiting for, from the time he first started going to the races as a youth at Santa Anita, not far from his family home in Arcadia, Calif., to his first jobs on the track, his association as a longtime assistant to Todd Pletcher, where he worked in concert with Javier Castellano, and then after striking out on his own nearly five years ago.

Game Winner draws away from Knicks Go (left) and Signalman in Friday's Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Joel Rosario entered the Churchill Downs jockeys room late Saturday afternoon, stripped off a set of Centennial Farm silks, and offered a hand of greeting, then quickly took it back.

“Let me take a shower first,” he said. “I got a little dirty.”

Shamrock Rose first in BC Filly and Mare Sprint's dramatic finish

Justin N. Lane
Shamrock rose paid $53.80 with her win in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – With just a furlong to go Saturday in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, more than half the field was still ahead of Shamrock Rose.

But not unlike last year, jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. summoned a tremendous surge from his mount, and Shamrock Rose was up in the final couple of jumps to prevail in a four-horse photo in a dramatic 12th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Filly and Mare Sprint, the first of nine straight Saturday BC events at Churchill Downs.

Stormy Liberal scores repeat win in Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint

Barbara D. Livingston
Stormy Liberal (left), with Drayden Van Dyke aboard, outfinishes World of Trouble in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Stormy Liberal did more than win Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs. He also put his name in the Breeders’ Cup history books as the race’s second repeat winner, joining Mizdirection, who went back to back in 2012-13.

Unlike Mizdirection, who raced over the same Santa Anita course in winning her two Turf Sprints, Stormy Liberal took his show on the road from California to run in Kentucky. Yet his unfamiliarity with the Churchill Downs course, as well as limited experience on wet ground, never affected his performance.

Barbara D. Livingston
Game Winner remains unbeaten in four starts by winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile on Friday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Though trainer Bob Baffert has won the Kentucky Derby five times, none has come with the three horses with whom he won the prior year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Friday, at Churchill Downs, Baffert won his fourth Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with Game Winner, who will now be one of several candidates Baffert figures to have for next year’s Kentucky Derby.

Travel decisions for next year on hold for Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Newspaperofrecord

Barbara D. Livingston
Newspaperofrecord and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies by 6 3/4 lengths.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 2-year-old filly Newspaperofrecord possesses the equine equivalent of a Roman nose. When she walks around the shed row her right hind hoof audibly clips her right front hoof. In the barn the filly might be less than ideal, but out on the racetrack she has so far been perfect.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Line of Duty targeting English classics

Debra A. Roma
Line of Duty, ridden by William Buick, earned an 83 Beyer Speed Figure for his Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf win Friday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Line of Duty, who won the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on Friday, will jet back to England early next week, then travel on to Dubai, where he’ll winter, probably not race, and prepare for the English classics of spring 2019.

Uncle Benny, who might have won the Juvenile Turf with better luck, is headed to Florida, plans uncertain, with a move from turf to dirt under consideration.
