No immediate decision on Enable's future after BC Turf win

Debra A. Roma
Enable and jockey Frankie Dettori win the Breeders' Cup Turf by three-quarters of a length.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Enable courageously ran her way into the record books Saturday at Churchill Downs, becoming the first horse to win both the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Breeders’ Cup Turf in the same year. Now, the question is whether Enable will be given the opportunity to make more history in 2019.

A decision on that will not be made in the short term, according to Teddy Grimthorpe, the racing manager for Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms, which bred and owns the superstar 4-year-old filly. Grimthorpe did say that Enable would certainly not run again in 2018.

Based on a 10-4-2-1 scoring system on first- through fourth-place finishes, he earned 35 points to narrowly edge Joel Rosario (32) and Javier Castellano (30).

Shamrock Rose possible for La Brea after Breeders' Cup win

Justin N. Lane
Shamrock rose paid $53.80 with her win in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Shamrock Rose, the 25-1 winner of the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Saturday at Churchill Downs, was scheduled to ship Sunday to Mark Casse’s training facility in Ocala, Fla., where she will stay active for the time being.

Casse said he believes Shamrock Rose is deserving of the divisional Eclipse Award for filly-mare sprinter, but he will “keep an eye on” the Grade 1 La Brea on Dec. 26 at Santa Anita “in case we need” a victory in that seven-furlong race to further bolster the filly’s candidacy.

Gunnevera comes oh-so-close to finally notching Grade 1 win

Debra A. Roma
Gunnevera (left) fell just a length short of Accelerate in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -  Shortly after Gunnevera finished fifth behind the champion Gun Runner in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic his trainer, Antonio Sano, made a bold prediction.

“I told my owner and my family, next year we’re going to win the Classic,” Sano recalled.

He was nearly right.

Watchmaker: Breeders' Cup settled some but not all Eclipse Award races

Justin N. Lane
Accelerate and jockey Joel Rosario win the Breeders' Cup Classic by one length.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For my money, this Breeders’ Cup was an artistic success.

First, the decision to move all the 2-year-old races to Friday made for what I thought was by far the best format since the Breeders’ Cup went to a two-day event in 2007. Friday’s events made sense as a group way more than a random collection of races and was far more palatable than the patronizing “Ladies Day” concept. Moreover, this afforded the opportunity for the Distaff, a legacy event, to enjoy its rightful prime-time spot on Saturday.

Barbara D. Livingston
Accelerate (right) and jockey Joel Rosario win the Breeders' Cup Classic by one length.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The shadows of the late afternoon were quickly enveloping Churchill Downs on Saturday, and right amid the ones cast in the paddock by the saddling stalls was trainer John Sadler, and the scene could not have been more appropriate.

Arc winner Enable gamely prevails in Breeders' Cup Turf

Julie Wright
Frankie Dettori raises his whip in celebration following Enable's win Saturday in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In many ways, Enable came here as the star of the 35th Breeders’ Cup, a filly with a near flawless-record who had overcome injury and a brief illness to become a two-time winner of France’s biggest race, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

With a furlong to go in the $4 million Breeders’ Cup Turf, Enable had one last hurdle to overcome, a stern challenge from the 3-year-old filly Magical, the Aidan O’Brien-trainee who was coming off a Group 1 victory just two weeks ago at Ascot.

Expert Eye rallies to win blanket finish in Breeders' Cup Mile

Debra A. Roma
Expert Eye and jockey Frankie Dettori narrowly prevail in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The trainer is a sir, the racing manager a lord, the owner a prince, and on Saturday at Churchill Downs, their horse was king as Expert Eye won the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile.

The jockey? He’s just Frankie. And Frankie Dettori’s late-career brilliance helped Expert Eye finally live up to his hype.
