Belmont 2012: I'll Have Another's camp calm

Barbara D. Livingston
Benjamin Perez, foreman for trainer Doug O’Neill, walks I’ll Have Another on Tuesday.

ELMONT, N.Y. - A little more than an hour after I'll Have Another completed his usual morning gallop Tuesday at Belmont Park, he was safely tucked away in his stall in Barn 9, groom Inosencio Diaz standing alongside him. Doug O'Neill, the trainer of I'll Have Another, had earlier that morning decided to delay by 24 hours I'll Have Another's relocation to the detention barn in which all the horses in Saturday's Belmont Stakes needed to be moved by Wednesday. As someone who is closer to I'll Have Another than anyone else, Diaz thought I'll Have Another would be just fine.

Belmont Stakes live chat with Free, King, Privman

Daily Racing Form's Brad Free, Byron King and Jay Privman joined users for a Belmont Stakes chat on Thursday afternoon. Here are the highlights:

Brad Free: Looks like a four-horse race to me, giving Dullahan benefit of doubt. Union Rags makes it four, but the truth is I see it as a two-horse race between I’ll Have Another and Paynter.

Belmont Stakes 2012: Servis advises O'Neill to enjoy the ride

Barbara D. Livingston
John Servis has not had a horse run in the Triple Crown series since Smarty Jones won the Derby and Preakness in 2004.

BENSALEM, Pa. − John Servis has been where Doug O’Neill is now − on the precipice of racing history.

So as O’Neill prepares I’ll Have Another for his attempt to become Thoroughbred racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner in Saturday’s 144th Belmont Stakes, Servis offers this bit of advice.

“Slow down and enjoy the ride, because you’ll look up and it’ll be five years down the line, and you’ll [wonder], ‘What happened?’ ” Servis said. “It just flies by, it really does. Next thing you know it’s over, and it’s a long time getting back − if you get back.”

Hovdey: For Reddam, a little karma couldn't hurt in Belmont

Barbara D. Livingston
Paul Reddam’s support section Saturday will include Beverly Lewis, owner of Silver Charm and Charismatic.

Paul Reddam, a racehorse owner of manageable superstitions, chose to look upon the victory of I’ll Have Another in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes earlier this year as a good omen. Among the perks of victory was a winner’s circle ceremony graced by the presence of Beverly Lewis, known far and wide as Bob’s better half and, since the death of her husband in 2006, the keeper of a considerable flame.

Beyer: What Belmont history can teach Gutierrez

Barbara D. Livingston
Mario Gutierrez (right), with I’ll Have Another’s trainer, Doug O’Neill, has never ridden at Belmont.

When jockey Mario Gutierrez came to Pimlico to ride I’ll Have Another in the Preakness, he knew almost nothing about the race or the track. He had spent most of his career at little Hastings Park in Vancouver. And so he studied.

He went to the press box to watch prior runnings of the race on a video monitor, then returned to his hotel and studied more: “I watched past replays of the Preakness and the horses who were involved in the race. I did my homework.” Once Gutierrez felt properly prepared, he relaxed.

Hollywood Park: Baffert hot at home if not in Triple Crown

Barbara D. Livingston
Bob Baffert went into the week with a double-digit lead in victories over the second-place trainer, John Sadler.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert is down to his last chance.
After disappointing losses by Bodemeister in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes last month, the lightly raced Paynter starts in Saturday's Belmont Stakes as Baffert's final opportunity to earn a victory in the series of races he covets the most.
