Emerging Market (foreground) earned a 96 Beyer Speed Figure for his three-quarter-length debut win Saturday at Tampa.

They only won maiden races in their debuts at Tampa Bay Downs, but expect to hear plenty more from 3-year-olds Emerging Market and Always a Runner throughout the year.

Trainer Chad Brown said he had both horses rated highly among his 2-year-olds during the summer of 2025, but both were delayed getting to the races due to pneumonia.

Barbara D. Livingston
Jockey Dylan Davis was injured when he was thrown from his mount in a Nov. 14 race at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – In less than two weeks, jockey Dylan Davis will find out if he’s greenlighted to begin his return to the saddle. It’s a comeback that he almost thought about not attempting.

Davis suffered a litany of injuries – nine broken ribs, a fractured right collarbone, a partially fractured right arm, a collapsed lung, and he lost a kidney – as a result of a spill at Aqueduct last Nov. 14, the day before his 31st birthday.

Shape Note, a winner of four of his last five, will be favored on Sunday, partially because Irad Ortiz Jr. rides him back.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Handicappers could find themselves having a difficult time separating the top four contenders – Shape Note, Boat’s a Rockin, Cyclonite, and Itza Boss – in Sunday’s $86,000 allowance and optional-claiming feature at Gulfstream Park. The sprint lured 11 potential starters to go five furlongs on the turf.

‘Big Joe' ready to roll regardless of pace scenario

Coady Media
Roll On Big Joe has won four of his last six starts under Julien Leparoux.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – At first glance, there does not appear to be an abundance of pace in the $150,000 King Cotton on Sunday at Oaklawn Park, which could give the quick Roll On Big Joe a tactical advantage as he seeks to win his third consecutive stakes race.

Iscreamuscream has a pre-approved date in the breeding shed with Not This Time.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Preparations for the North American breeding season are coming down to the wire, but there’s still time to pick up a broodmare or prospect.

The Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale marks the last chance to do so at a public auction, just under the wire. The single-session sale is set for Monday, Feb. 9, at the company’s Newtown Paddocks headquarters in Lexington, less than 24 hours before many breeding sheds open. For example, Spendthrift Farm, which stands seven-time reigning leading sire Into Mischief, opens for business on Feb. 10.

Yellow Card, Flyover need better trips in Clocker's Corner

Barbara D. Livingston
Yellow Card, a troubled sixth in the Joe Hernandez, looks for a better trip in Sunday's Clocker's Corner at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Bad trips come in different forms, as illustrated by a pair of contenders in the $100,000 Clocker’s Corner Stakes on Sunday at Santa Anita.

Seven older horses entered the six-furlong turf sprint, restricted to non-winners of a graded stakes in 2025-26. Sumter could start favored based on his last-out runner-up finish in the Grade 2 Joe Hernandez Stakes on the hill, but two who finished behind Sumter might slip through the cracks.

Despite small field, Las Virgenes a compelling proposition

Debra A. Roma
Super Corredora makes her first start since wiring the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies three months ago.

ARCADIA, Calif. – It is rare for a nongraded stakes with just four runners to offer both national significance and wagering value. An exception is the $100,000 Las Virgenes Stakes for 3-year-old fillies Sunday at Santa Anita.

The one-mile Las Virgenes landed three of the top four finishers in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies – winner Super Corredora, runner-up Explora, and fourth-place finisher Meaning. The outsider in the field is recent maiden winner Bank Shot.
