Starship Renegade, a winner of 3 of 4 starts this year, faces Dean Delivers in the Big Drama.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Steve Dwoskin could be in line for a big day Saturday at Gulfstream Park when he sends out the ever-improving Starship Renegade as the likely second choice in the $65,000 Big Drama Stakes and Choose Joy as the favorite 30 minutes earlier in a five-furlong overnight handicap on the turf.

Saturday’s attractive 12-race program will conclude on a high note, with the $75,000 Roar for 3-year-olds on the grass.

Weekend GamePlan: Picks for Dinner Party, Jim McKay Turf Sprint, Mizdirection

That's Right wins the Turf Monster at PRX Sept 24 2022
Barbara D. Livingston
That's Right may be the quickest in the Jim McKay Turf Sprint and is 3 for 3 at five furlongs on turf.

The second leg of the Triple Crown and as usual three legs of Weekend GamePlan plays. The big race of the day comes on dirt, but we’re seeking an all-turf coast-to-coast triple.

Dinner Party

Granting that Atone can bounce back after a dismal run in the Muniz Memorial (the trainer said he came out of the race sick), I still don’t like the horse at anything close to the listed price, 9-5, which seems about right.

Maker stablemates will battle in Louisville Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Therapist and Yamato, both trained by Mike Maker, are part of a field of 11 in Saturday's Grade 3 Louisville at Churchill Downs.

Therapist and Yamato have, perhaps, gotten familiar with one another since joining trainer Mike Maker’s barn after being claimed earlier this year. The stablemates line up in the starting gate together, facing a number of horses who became familiar foes during the Keeneland spring meet, in Saturday’s Grade 3, $225,000 Louisville Stakes on the Churchill Downs turf.

Freedom Flyer gets back on turf, takes on Elm Drive again

Benoit Photo
Freedom Flyer will get back on turf Saturday, when he takes on Elm Drive and seven others in the $100,000 Mizdirection.

ARCADIA, Calif. – A last-minute surface switch that helped some and compromised others is a key factor Saturday at Santa Anita, where Elm Drive and Freedom Flyer try again in a filly-mare sprint scheduled for the hillside turf course.

A deep field entered the $100,000 Mizdirection, and though Freedom Flyer is no cinch, at least she will race on preferred footing. That did not happen April 8. Halfway through the Santa Anita Derby card, the final turf races moved to dirt after a horse slipped and fell in an earlier turf race.

Brown's pair could be enough in Gallorette

Barbara D. Livingston
Whitebeam was beaten just a neck in her North American debut, the Plenty of Grace Stakes at Aqueduct on April 16. She is one of two Gallorette entrants for trainer Chad Brown.

BALTIMORE – It’s not often that trainer Chad Brown is outnumbered in a graded stakes race on turf, but his formidable duo of Whitebeam and Eminent Victor face three solid foes from Graham Motion’s barn in a competitive edition of Saturday’s Grade 3 Gallorette for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles at Pimlico.

Whitebeam, a Juddmonte homebred foaled in England, made her North American debut for Brown in Aqueduct’s Plenty of Grace on April 16. Stymied by glacial fractions in a race won by pacesetter Evvie Jets, Whitebeam still rallied to finish second, beaten only a neck.

Mage has a melting pot of owners

Barbara D. Livingston
Mage's ownership group features a diverse group that's hoping to capture the second leg of the Triple Crown Saturday.

Mage won the Kentucky Derby in his fourth career start for a four-pronged partnership. The Preakness Stakes favorite races for OGMA Investments, a partnership helmed by trainer Gustavo Delgado’s son and assistant Gustavo Delgado Jr.; bloodstock agent Ramiro Restrepo; Sam Herzberg’s Sterling Racing; and Commonwealth, a sports investment app offering micro-shares in racehorses.

Castellano looks to ride momentum of first Derby win

Barbara D. Livingston
Jockey Javier Castellano celebrates his first Kentucky Derby win aboard Mage. Castellano is riding high in 2023 as the recipient of the George Woolf Award and winner of six graded stakes.

A Little League baseball game played in a park in Garden City, N.Y., three days before the Kentucky Derby may have foreshadowed what lay ahead for jockey Javier Castellano on the first Saturday in May.

Bottom of the sixth – the last inning – in a 0-0 game, 10-year-old Brady Castellano, Javier’s son, gets his first hit of the season. Steals second. Steals third. Next batter hits a ground ball to second and Castellano beats the throw home, sliding in safely to score the game-winning run.

A celebration ensues.

Ryan Thompson
Super Chow has won 6 of 8 starts, with three victories in listed stakes.

BALTIMORE – A good, old-fashioned East Coast-West Coast showdown of speed could be in play Saturday at Pimlico when Super Chow meets Havnameltdown in the Grade 3, $200,000 Chick Lang Stakes for 3-year-olds going six furlongs at Pimlico.

Super Chow, based on the East Coast with trainer Jorge Delgado, has won 6 of 8 starts with three listed stakes wins on his résumé. One of his wins came in a first-level allowance at Pimlico last fall.

Missed the Boat has pace to track in sprint

Missed the Boat heads a field of 11 $25,000 claimers who will race 5 1/2 furlongs in Saturday’s featured race at Emerald Downs.

A winner at the trip at Emerald Downs on a pair of prior occasions, Missed the Boat was a model of consistency at the Auburn, Wash., track last year, finishing in the top three in all six local starts, despite being disqualified from first to fifth in his second-to-last start.
