Mz Big Bucks has won her last two starts, including the Cupecoy's Joy at Belmont (above). She will two turns for the first time on Wednesday.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Mz Big Bucks has gotten little respect from the public, having gone postward at odds of 8-1 and 9-1 while winning her last two starts, including the Cupecoy’s Joy division of the New York Stallion Stakes Series last month at Belmont Park.

But that is not likely to be the case in Wednesday’s finale at Saratoga, with Mz Big Bucks expected to go postward the favorite in the $150,000 Statue of Liberty Stakes to be decided at one mile on the turf, weather permitting, for 3-year-old New York-sired fillies.

Ramblin' Wreck leads familiar foes in Cab Calloway division of NYSS

Chelsea Durand/NYRA
Off a six-month layoff, Ramblin' Wreck overcame a bad start to take the Spectacular Bid division of the NYSS at Belmont last month. On Thursday, the son of Redesdale will be the one to beat in the Cab Calloway division of the NYSS at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Danny Gargan will hope for a different trip but the same result when Ramblin’ Wreck heads a field of eight turf runners entered in Thursday’s $150,000 Cab Calloway division of the New York Stallion Stakes at Saratoga.

Last month, in his first start off a six-month layoff, Ramblin’ Wreck broke poorly and was taken up soon after the start by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. but came with a wide rally from last to win the Spectacular Bid division of the NYSS by one length over favored Twenty Six Black.

Belfast Banter finally gets a try at right distance in A.P. Smithwick

Barbara D. Livingston
Named after legendary steeplechase jockey Alfred Patrick “Paddy” Smithwick, the Grade 1 A.P. Smithwick was first run in 1980 but didn't obtain stakes status until 1996. A field of nine will lead this year's A.P. Smithwick, which kicks off the Wednesday card at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A year ago at this time, trainer Cyril Murphy was still trying to figure out what distance was best for Belfast Banter.

Murphy felt longer was better for the Irish-bred gelding, which is why he held him out of the A.P. Smithwick at 2 1/16 miles and waited for the Jonathan Sheppard at 2 3/8 miles, where he finished fourth behind the dominant winner Snap Decision.

“He’s a horse that leads you to believe he wants to go longer, but what he really wants is a strongly run short race where he races on the bridle, traveling well,” Murphy said.

Crispy Cat has to deal with talented shippers in My Frenchman

Ryan Thompson
Crispy Cat looms the one to beat and is one of two potential starters for trainer Jorge Delgado in Sunday's My Frenchman Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Were the $100,000 My Frenchman Stakes on Sunday at Monmouth Park strictly a local affair, trainer Jorge Delgado would have the race covered, turf or dirt. Delgado has Crispy Cat in the main body of the My Frenchman, restricted to 3-year-olds and carded for 5 1/2 furlongs on turf, and Super Chow as a capable main-track-only entrant. But shippers from Kentucky and Virginia will have a say.
