Kentucky Derby 2026: Reddam, O'Neill in position for a third lightning strike

California-bred Pavlovian could give owner-breeder Paul Reddam and trainer Doug O'Neill their third Kentucky Derby win together. They won in 2012 with I'll Have Another and doubled up in 2016 with Nyquist.

Four weeks and six days after I’ll Have Another won the 2012 Kentucky Derby at odds of 15-1, his date with Triple Crown destiny came to an abrupt end when the horse, who also won the Preakness, had to be scratched from the Belmont Stakes due to a career-ending tendon injury.

Doug O’Neill, the trainer of I’ll Have Another, remembers calling Paul Reddam to convey the news.

Chief Wallabee's Derby odds were lowered from 10-1 to 8-1 by DRF's David Aragona after his strong, blinkered Monday workout at Churchill Downs.

WHO’S HOT

Chief Wallabee, in blinkers, had a super workout over the Churchill Downs main track on Monday which created a lot of buzz and in turn prompted Daily Racing Form’s David Aragona to lower the Florida Derby third-place finisher to 8-1 from 10-1 on his pre-draw morning-line.

The Puma, the Tampa Bay Derby winner and Florida Derby runner-up, was raised to 10-1 from 8-1. The Puma had his strongest move in a while last weekend at Gulfstream Park prior to shipping to Churchill.

Run With Liberty will sneak up on no one after dazzling debut

Benoit Photo
Trainer Jeff Mullins says Run With Liberty is "not really anything to look at, but she can run.”

ARCADIA, Calif. – Run With Liberty, an ordinary-looking filly who delivered an extraordinary debut, returns Friday at Santa Anita. She paid $30 to win first out, but there are no secrets Friday.

One month after a visually impressive turf-mile debut, Run With Liberty is favored in race 5, a turf mile for 3-year-old fillies that is the first California-bred allowance on Friday. In race 8, Letmein and The G M sprint six furlongs on dirt.

Bewitch: With legit pace, Just Basking can give Wilkes a turf marathon sweep

Just Basking wins The Very One at Gulfstream Park in February. She was hindered by slow fractions in her last start, the Orchid Stakes.

There’s no chance Just Basking runs as well Friday in the Bewitch Stakes as Burnham Square did last Saturday winning the Elkhorn, but even, say 85 percent of that performance level would give trainer Ian Wilkes a sweep of the two 1 1/2-mile turf stakes at the Keeneland spring meeting.

Burnham Square delivered a mighty punch in the Elkhorn, winning by more than nine lengths, and Just Basking actually brings some of the same characteristics to the Grade 3, $350,000 Bewitch, which drew nine entrants.

Runaway Diva regains form for hot Hemingway

Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos
Before Saturday's triumph, Runaway Diva had won just once in her previous 11 starts dating back to September 2024.

Some eyebrows might have raised when Runaway Diva was assigned high weight of 123 pounds for Saturday’s $75,000 Mo Green overnight handicap. After all, the well-traveled mare was coming off an average-looking fourth-place finish in the Sandy Bottom Stakes five weeks ago at Colonial Downs and had won just once in her previous 11 starts dating back to September 2024.
