Our Lyla Grace must navigate large lineup in comeback race

When trainer Candi Cryderman took a look at the list of entries for Saturday’s seventh race at Emerald Downs, she was, as she put it, “a little shocked.”

Shocked because the 5 1/2-furlong optional-claiming race her 7-year-old horse, Our Lyla Grace, is in will be contested by 11 fillies and mares. That’s an enormous field for this time of year – or any time, really – at the workaday Auburn, Wash., track.

Despite impressive win, Russell non-committal to Met Mile with Post Time

Barbara D. Livingston
Post Time, runner-up in the Met Mile last year, returned from a lengthy layoff with an impressive allowance victory but trainer Brittany Russell is still undecided for his next start.

Last weekend, Maryland-bred superstar Post Time made his long-awaited 5-year-old debut at Laurel and gave his hometown fans a show. By some quirk of the condition book, the two-time graded stakes winner was eligible for a conditional allowance and easily overwhelmed the field in a 13 1/4-length victory.

Opening weekend at Pimlico meaningful for locals; Ness leads the way with 14 entries

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Jamie Ness has 14 entries across three cards for Pimlico's opening weekend.

Because stakes races are reserved for the second half of the two-week Preakness Meet at Pimlico Race Course this year, the first weekend of racing will be a curious affair. Sure to be dwarfed by events the following weekend, the first three days will mean much more to local Maryland connections and a small group of outsiders searching for winning moments on the historic grounds.

Rain would dampen turf-heavy card; $22,381 pick six carryover

Chelsea Durand/NYRA
Lavender Disaster, a filly owned by Peter Brant and trained by Chad Brown, is scheduled to make her 3-year-old debut Friday in race 4.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Mother Nature could very well spoil the proceedings Friday at Aqueduct, where four scheduled turf races on the nine-card are likely to be impacted by a forecast that calls for as much as an inch of rain in the New York metropolitan area.

Friday's card starts with a carryover of $22,381 in the pick six after the wager went unsolved on Thursday.

Mullikin unlikely for Met Mile

Barbara D. Livingston
Mullikin's 2024 peak came winning the Grade 1 Forego over seven furlongs in late August at Saratoga.

Mullikin finished second Dec. 7 behind the top-level performer Locked in the Cigar Mile. Making his first start since that race in the seven-furlong Churchill Downs Stakes on Derby Day, Mullikin lost ground while pressing a fast pace, which collapsed in a race dominated by late runners, and held stubbornly for a close fifth.

Was that enough to send Mullikin on to the $1 million Met Mile on June 7 at Saratoga? Probably not.

Miss Mary Nell, Iron Hand meet following similar race patterns

Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos
Iron Hand enters Friday's eighth race on a two-race winning streak.

Miss Mary Nell, a 3-year-old filly trained by Carlos David, will take on a small group of 3-year-old male runners at Gulfstream Park on Friday in the eighth race, a $58,000 allowance run at 1 1/16 miles on synthetic. Though it will be her first time running against the boys, Miss Mary Nell will have a natural rival in Iron Hand, a Jose D’Angelo-trained colt whose most recent victory closely mirrors one earned by the filly last time out.

Lynch hatching stakes plans for trio

Coady Media
Based on speed figures, Shred the Gnar was the fastest 3-year-old filly to race at Churchill last week.

Good Cheer, presumably the best 3-year-old filly in North America, won the Kentucky Oaks by more than two lengths and earned a 91 Beyer Speed Figure. Nitrogen, definitely the best 3-year-old turf filly and arguably the second-best horse of her generation, won the Edgewood Stakes by more than three lengths, earning an 88 Beyer.

Preakness 2025: England's Heart of Honor ready for an adventure

Jamie Osborne at Meydan April 4 2025

Trainer Jamie Osborne said Heart of Honor will fly from England to Kentucky on Thursday. Osborne’s daughter Saffie will ride in the Preakness.

This year’s Preakness won’t have the Kentucky Derby winner, but it will have a rare European shipper.

On Tuesday, the connections of Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty announced their horse would skip the Preakness and point to the June 7 Belmont Stakes at Saratoga. Trainer Bill Mott cited the two-week turnaround as the reason Sovereignty would be held out of the Preakness.
