Mandella mapping out route for Kopion to get to Breeders' Cup

Jetta Vaughns
Off her win in the Derby City Distaff, Kopion has stakes options in New York and California, with the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint as the long-term goal.

Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella has worked out a firm plan to get the 4-year-old filly Kopion to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 1 from his stable’s base at Santa Anita, east of Los Angeles.

“We’ll take the 210 down to the 57 and hook into the 5,” he said on Monday morning.

Yes, Mandella is well-versed on Southern California freeways. He has also turned Kopion into a star sprint filly, emphasized by her three-length win in Saturday’s Grade 1 Derby City Distaff at seven furlongs at Churchill Downs.

Heredia making North American debut in Beaugay Stakes off 575-day break

After winning the Lake Placid in August, Grayosh made her final start of the 2024 season in October in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, where she finished fifth.

Coming off a 575-day layoff, 6-year-old mare Heredia will make her North American debut in the Grade 3 Beaugay Stakes at Aqueduct on Sunday. Trainer Graham Motion described the long road to prepare Heredia for racing in the United States after spending her first 13 races in Great Britain.

“She came to me last winter, had a couple works, and then came up with a little soft tissue issue,” Motion said. “We gave her a lot of time off, and I kind of had her ready to go since we got out of Florida, and then we decided to wait for this race.”

Quint's Brew ready for a test in Westchester Stakes

Quint's Brew, off a runner-up finish in the Grade 2 Carter, tops Sunday's Westchester Stakes at Aqueduct.

Mike Repole did the New York Racing Association a favor by electing to run champion Fierceness in Friday’s Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs. It made Sunday’s Grade 3, $175,000 Westchester Stakes at Aqueduct a more competitive race.

The one-mile race, which had been trainer Todd Pletcher’s target for Fierceness before Repole opted for the Alysheba, drew an evenly-matched field of seven, many of whom are in excellent form.

C W Prize streaks into Cherokee Nation

Barbara D. Livingston
C W Prize has won five of his last eight races, including stakes in his last two starts.

Inca Empire and Ghost Hero have accounted for the last two runnings of the year’s richest race for Oklahoma-breds, but there’s a chance neither will go favored Monday in the $50,000 Cherokee Nation at Will Rogers Downs.

That role could go to C W Prize, who is looking for his third consecutive stakes win at the meet in the one-mile race for 3-year-olds and up bred in Oklahoma.

A field of eight has signed on for the handicap, including stakes winners Tommyhawk and Kaleo.

Fresh horses abound on Santa Anita Sunday card; two-day pick six carryover of $77,347

Judge Miller hasn’t raced since a third-place finish in the Hollywood Gold Cup last May. He returns at 6 1/2 furlongs.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Fresh horses are the focus Sunday at Santa Anita on a card that begins with a two-day carryover of $77,347 in the pick six after the bet went unhit Friday and Saturday.

Debut 2-year-olds, a European mare making her second U.S. start in a turf stakes, and comeback sprinters in a salty allowance are the most compelling runners on the program. By chance, the most probable winner might be in the richest race.
