Dream Concert may end losing streak in overnight handicap

Dream Concert at TAM March 26 2023
Tom Keyser
Although Dream Concert has been competitive against some very tough rivals, she hasn't won since October 2023.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Kathleen O’Connell is a trainer in transition at the moment

O’Connell has spent the majority of her time since she secured a fourth Tampa Bay Downs training title earlier this month going through the tedious process of shipping and bedding down the large contingent she plans to race this summer at Monmouth Park. She also has 22 horses stabled at Gulfstream Park, including Dream Concert who figures to go postward one of the choices in Sunday’s $70,000 overnight handicap for fillies and mares, which will be decided at a mile on the main track.

Bernieandtherose to bypass Black-Eyed Susan for Bouwerie

Chelsea Durand/NYRA
Bernieandtherose will stay with New York-breds in the Bouwerie, instead of Friday's Black-Eyed Susan.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Though she is nominated to Friday’s Grade 2, $300,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico, the multiple stakes-winning New York-bred 3-year-old filly Bernieandtherose will stay with her own kind in the $200,000 Bouwerie Stakes on June 4 at Saratoga.

Bernieandtherose has won four consecutive New York-bred races, including the East View and Maddie May stakes. She was entered in the Grade 3 Gazelle Stakes on April 5 at Aqueduct but scratched due to a cough.

Grande to undergo further testing

Grande was forced to scratch from the Kentucky Derby due to a cracked heel.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Grande, who was scratched from the Kentucky Derby by the state regulatory veterinarians due to a cracked heel, was to undergo further tests to determine the extent, if any, of his injury.

Grande was examined by Dr. Larry Bramlage at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital last Tuesday, but those tests came back “inconclusive,” according to trainer Todd Pletcher

“He’s actually going for further tests on Tuesday,” Pletcher said. “So far, we haven’t found anything to hang our hat on.”

Spirit of St Louis, winner of the Grade 1 Turf Classic, will lead string of contenders for trainer Chad Brown at the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Chad Brown will point his bevy of stakes winners from the first weekend in May to races at the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at Saratoga during the first week of June.

Spirit of St Louis, who won the Grade 1 Old Forester Turf Classic on May 3 at Churchill Downs, will be pointed to the Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes on the Belmont Stakes undercard. Typically run at 1 1/4 miles, the Manhattan will be run at 1 3/16 miles because of the configuration of Saratoga’s turf course.

Brown has rare turf sprinter in French import Tazara

Weekend Rags at SAR July 11 2024
Barbara D. Livingston
Jorge Abreu thinks Weekend Rags ran back too quickly last time out. She should like the six-furlong distance of Sunday’s turf sprint.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – For all his success on turf, trainer Chad Brown isn’t well known for his prowess with turf sprinters.

“I just don’t get a lot of them,” said Brown, who reminded that he conditioned the multiple graded stakes turf sprinter Silver Timber some dozen years ago.

Brown may have a talented female turf sprinter in Tazara, who makes her U.S. and seasonal debut in a second-level allowance/optional $75,000 claiming race that serves as the feature on Sunday’s nine-race card at Aqueduct.

Power Squeeze gets major class relief but is no cinch in Serena's Song

Barbara D. Livingston
After her last two starts against males, Power Squeeze gets some class relief in Sunday's Serena's Song at Monmouth.

Facing several of the best older male dirt route horses in the country, Power Squeeze finished a respectable eighth in the Pegasus World Cup. On March 29, in the Ghostzapper Stakes, Power Squeeze finished a good second behind Pegasus winner White Abbario. Suffice it to say, 4-year-old filly Power Squeeze gets a massive dose of class relief Sunday at Monmouth Park in the $100,000 Serena’s Song.

Lack of pace could hinder Ghostly Gal in turf allowance

Coady Media
Ghostly Gal will make her first start at Churchill Downs on Sunday since a victory in the Claiming Crown Jewel last fall.

The Sunday card at Churchill Downs closes the week with a 10-race program offering appealing fare, with three allowance events and two maiden special weights.

Landing early, as the fourth race on the program, is a non-winners of two allowance race with a $134,000 purse for fillies and mares going nine furlongs on turf, and the field of nine includes some stakes-quality types. Among those, Ghostly Gal may offer value as she comes back to a favored course, but she will have to contend with the race shape.
