Preakness hopeful Goal Oriented backed by historic breeders

Barbara D. Livingston
Goal Oriented will enter the Preakness off an allowance win at Churchill Downs that made him a perfect 2 for 2.

Baeza, who finished a closing third in the Kentucky Derby, is among those awaiting the Belmont Stakes a little more than three weeks off. Historic Runnymede Farm, which raised the colt and consigned him to sale for his breeder, does, however, have another rooting interest in Saturday’s Preakness Stakes in Goal Oriented. The farm co-bred, raised, and sold the lightly raced and unbeaten colt, who is from the immediate family of Eclipse Award champion Lady Eli.

Preakness 2025: Gosger can expand Harvey Clarke Racing Stable's legacy

Coady Media
Gosger stamped himself a Preakness contender with a victory in the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland.

The late Harvey Clarke found glory as a classic breeder when I’ll Have Another won the 2012 Kentucky Derby and then put on a courageous performance to win the Preakness Stakes. Clarke won’t be here to see it, but his family stable’s homebred Gosger, from the same family as I’ll Have Another, is set to seek another Preakness for his program when he goes in this Saturday’s 150th edition of the classic.

Jody's Pride being pointed to Ballerina off Ruffian win

Chelsea Durand/NYRA
Jody's Pride will run fresh in the Ballerina, a tactic that has been successful in the past for her.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Jody’s Pride, winner of Saturday’s Grade 2 Ruffian Stakes will be pointed to the Grade 1, $500,000 Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 23, trainer Jorge Abreu said Sunday.

Abreu pointed to how well Jody’s Pride runs fresh, which is why he is planning to skip races like the Bed o’ Roses on June 6 and Honorable Miss on July 20.

“She runs better fresh, [Saturday] she ran a hard race,” Abreu said. “She came out of the race in good shape.”

Whatchatalkinabout could be headed to Del Mar for Bing Crosby

Susie Raisher
Whatchatalkinabout (3) came off a 114-day layoff to win the John Nerud last Saturday at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The New York-bred Whatchatalkinabout, winner of Saturday’s Grade 3 John Nerud Stakes, could be headed west for his next start, that being the Grade 1, $400,000 Bing Crosby at Del Mar on July 26.

Trainer Wesley Ward said the combination of the Bing Crosby being six furlongs, the 11 weeks between races, and the fact he has another top sprinter, Nakatomi, pointed to the sprint stakes this summer at Saratoga are the reasons he’s looking at the Bing Crosby for Whatchatalkinabout.

Clement may have three for Manhattan Stakes

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Far Bridge comes off this victory as the heavy favorite in Saturday's Grade 2 Man o' War Stakes.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Christophe Clement has gotten off to a terrific start at the Belmont at the Big A spring/summer meet with five wins – four in stakes – through the first two weeks.

Clement won Saturday’s Grade 2 Man o’ War with heavily favored Far Bridge, who will now be pointed to the Grade 1 Manhattan at Saratoga on June 7. Clement could point three horses to that race, including Deterministic and Carson’s Run, the one-two finishers from the Grade 2 Fort Marcy on May 3.

Hill Road gets his wings for Belmont in Peter Pan victory

Chelsea Durand
Hill Road scored a three-quarter-length victory in the Peter Pan, earning a 94 Beyer Figure.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – In Hill Road, winner of Saturday’s Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes at Aqueduct, trainer Chad Brown will be bringing a relatively fresh horse to the June 7 Belmont Stakes at Saratoga. But Brown doesn’t think that gives him any sort of advantage over horses like Kentucky Derby first- and third-place finishers Sovereignty and Baeza, who are skipping Saturday’s Preakness to point to the Belmont.

Best sweepstakes casinos for 2025 — Top sweepstakes casino sites to explore

Sweepstakes Casino sites offer a great alternative for players who don’t live in a state with real money online casinos. But what are sweepstakes casinos, and how do they work? This page will cover all the must-know details, from the welcome bonuses to the best games to play and much more. Read on for your comprehensive overview of sweepstakes casinos in 2025.

List of best sweepstakes casino sites & offers in the US

Disclaimer: If you are currently in a state where sweepstakes casino sites are not permitted, this now includes New York for some sites, you will encounter restrictions on the offers displayed on this page.

Comparing the best sweepstakes casinos

Most sweepstakes casinos are very similar. Many of them offer big game libraries with lots of overlap, accept the same payment methods, and have simple user interfaces. However, small differences can make a big impact, which means some sweepstakes casino sites rise to the top in specific categories. Here are a few of our top picks based on criteria you might look for in a sweepstakes casino.

Best overall sweepstakes casino: McLuck
McLuck takes the cake and earns the distinction of best overall sweepstakes casino. It has (almost) everything a player could want, including a deep well of slot games and a strong selection of live dealer table games and game-show titles. Plus, McLuck offers McJackpots, which give players a chance at massive SC and GC prizes on any spin of any slot, so long as they’re opted in. McLuck also has a solid iOS and Android app for mobile players.

The only setback at McLuck is the site’s lack of single-player table games. If those are your jam, you’re better served trying a different site like Chumba.

Sweepstakes casino site with the best library of games: Chumba
Chumba Casino doesn’t have the most casino games (though it comes close). Instead, it packs a real punch with its incredible variety. At Chumba, you can enjoy slots, table games, Slingo, bingo, live dealer, instant games, and scratchcards. No other sweepstakes casino can beat this array of different game types, making Chumba an ideal choice for players who want lots of novelty.

Best sweepstakes casino bonuses and rewards: WOW Vegas
WOW Vegas grants new players 250,000 WOW Coins and 5 free Sweepstakes Coins — a great start. The real kicker is the slate of ongoing promotions for WOW Vegas players. Every day is packed to the brim with excellent promotions, such as tournaments, email prize draws, wheel spins, happy hours, and more. No sweepstakes casino comes close to the incredible array of promotions offered by WOW Vegas.

Best sweepstakes casino app: Pulsz
There’s a reason the Pulsz mobile app enjoys a high rating on the iOS App Store (4.4 stars) and Google Play (4.3 stars). It’s streamlined and polished, making navigation simple. Plus, it just looks nice with the trademark pink and white Pulsz aesthetic. What’s more, the games load fast and look fantastic on mobile. Most of them are playable in portrait or landscape orientation, too. If you like to play on mobile, put Pulsz at the top of your sweepstakes casino list. Pulsz recently upped the minimum age from 18 to 21.

Tips for playing at sweepstakes casinos

Whether you’re new to sweepstakes gaming or looking for a refresher, here are some of our top tips for maximizing your time with a site.

Purchases are optional but beneficial

Sweepstakes casinos are always free to play. In other words, purchases are not required. Even so, they can be a great option if you’re willing to shell out a few bucks for some Gold Coins. You’ll usually get some free Sweeps Coins as an added bonus. Plus, sweepstakes casinos frequently offer special discounts on Gold Coins.

Play with GC before using SC

Gold Coins are purely used to play for fun. Beyond that, you can use your Gold Coins to test out games and give new ones a try. This is a great way to discover new favorites before you use your Sweeps Coins on them.

Know all the redemption requirements

Before you start playing towards a Sweeps Coin redemption, know the requirements. Check for redemption minimums, available methods, and playthrough requirements. Every sweepstakes casino site is different, though most require at least 1x playthrough on all Sweeps Coins.

Find games that suit your play style

Looking for frequent hits with small wins? Try a low volatility game. High volatility is best for players who want bigger wins with less frequency. Keep RTP percentages in mind, too.

Those are great tips for slots, but keep in mind that you can play other games too. Table games, bingo, and instant games are frequently offered at sweepstakes casinos. Find the game that you like best.

Daily logins earn you rewards

Most sweepstakes casinos have a daily login bonus. The bonus usually increases with each consecutive day you log in, providing ample opportunity for more GC and SC. There are plenty of other promotions available as well, so make a habit of checking the “Promotions” page of your preferred online casino whenever you log on.

What are sweeps casino sites?

Sweepstakes casinos (or sweeps casinos) are available in many US states, offering an alternative to real money online casinos. When you play at a sweepstakes casino site, you play in one of two modes.

In standard mode, you use a standard currency, such as Gold Coins, and you’re just playing for fun. You can win more Gold Coins, but they don’t have any value.

In premium mode, you use a premium currency called Sweeps Coins (or similar). When you use your Sweeps Coins and win, you can redeem them for cash prizes or gift cards.

Winning at a sweepstakes casino may look and feel a lot like playing at a real money site, but it’s more akin to winning a sweepstakes. You play with SC, which functions as an entry.

Are sweeps casinos legal in the US?

Sweepstakes casinos are legal in most US states. Each state has the power to choose whether to allow sweepstakes casinos, and most do.

However, some notable markets outright prohibit sweepstakes casinos. Michigan, Montana, Nevada, and Washington are among them, and Louisiana seems poised to join that list.

We’re also in the midst of a new wave of sweepstakes casino bans, as some states look to clamp down on gaming options that aren’t regulated by the same government organizations that oversee real money online casinos. California, Connecticut, and New York are notable examples of states that have started to crack down on sweepstakes operators. VGW Brands, one of the largest online sweepstakes casino operators in the US, will pull out of New York and cease play on Aug. 1. So those looking to play Chumba Casino, LuckyLand Slots, and Global Poker in the state will be out of luck. Chumba Casino has also exited Delaware. This follows other sweepstakes casinos exiting New York like High 5 and WOW Vegas. High 5 Casino has exited Arkansas, Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Illinois. WOW Vegas will also exit Connecticut and Louisiana. Pulsz, meanwhile, has exited Maryland, New York, and New Jersey. Finally, McLuck is also not available in New York.

The good news for you, the player, is that sweepstakes casino sites will only allow you to play if your state allows them to operate. You need to select and confirm your state on sign-up. Even so, it’s helpful to know your state’s stance on sweepstakes casinos, so we encourage you to keep up with any possible bans or regulations coming down the legislative pipeline.

How sweepstakes casinos work

At their core, sweepstakes casinos allow you to enjoy casino-style games for fun, with the added opportunity to redeem cash prizes. To understand how they work, you need to know about their virtual currencies.

  • Standard Currency: often called Gold Coins, these are used to play games for fun. You can buy more, but they don’t have any value beyond playing the games on the site.
  • Premium Currency: These are usually called Sweeps Coins, Sweepstakes Coins, or similar. They cannot be purchased and are given as bonuses, free gifts with a Gold Coin purchase, or from mail-in requests. When you play with Sweeps Coins at least once and amass enough, you can redeem them for real prizes in the form of cash, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.

Each sweepstakes casino site has distinct terms and conditions to dictate how it works. For example, some sites require 2x or 3x playthrough on Sweeps Coins. Plus, each site has different minimum redemptions and processing times. While these differences are important, the structure of each site is the same.

Do sweepstakes casinos pay real money?

Strictly speaking, sweepstakes casinos do not pay out real money. They are distinct in the prizes they offer, though you can occasionally redeem cash prizes from sweepstakes casino sites.

Confused yet? That’s OK. The main thing you need to know is that you can redeem real prizes from sweepstakes casinos. If you play with Sweeps Coins, meet the playthrough requirement, and have enough for the redemption minimum, you can request a cash prize. It sounds a lot like real money payouts, but it’s slightly different because you can’t purchase sweepstakes coins or deposit money into your account. So, sweepstakes coin winnings are instead referred to as cash prizes.

If a sweepstakes casino claims to offer deposits and withdrawals, that’s probably a good sign that it’s not operating under sweepstakes laws. Look for language like “purchases” and “redemptions” instead.

Are sweeps casino winnings taxable?

Yes. Any redemptions from sweepstakes casino sites are considered taxable income. If you redeem enough over the course of a year, the sweeps casino may send you a tax form for filing. Even if you don’t receive such a form, you are still required to submit your winnings come tax day.

Difference between sweepstakes casinos and social casinos

You’ll often see the terms “Sweeps Casino” and ‘Social Casino” used interchangeably. For our purposes here, that’s fine. However, some players might want to know if the phrases actually mean different things, and we’ve got you covered.

This page covers a sweepstakes casino site in detail. It offers fun play with standard currency and the chance to redeem real prizes when playing with premium currency, such as sweeps coins.

A social casino is just the for-fun part of the experience. At a social casino, you can buy virtual currency and win more, but there’s no chance to redeem real prizes. The most prominent social casino is BetRivers.net, but there are many others.

Remember, these terms are more often than not used to mean the same thing. Don’t be concerned if you see a site calling itself a social casino offering cash prize redemptions

Getting started at a sweepstakes casino site

Signing up for a sweepstakes casino site is simple, usually taking just a few minutes. While the process can differ slightly between sites, the core principles remain. Follow these steps to get started, and remember that signing up usually gets you some free GC and SC as a welcome bonus.

  1. Head to your preferred sweeps casino.
  2. Click “Sign Up,” “Join,” or similar to get started.
  3. Provide the required information: name, email, username, date of birth, state, and a password (you will create one).
  4. Check any boxes required for sign-up; these usually mean you acknowledge the terms and conditions and privacy policy.
  5. If applicable, enter a promo code when the appropriate field appears.
  6. Continue through the sign-up steps and click “Create Account” (or similar) when prompted.
  7. Verify your email and/or phone number using a confirmation code sent to you, if required.
  8. Check your wallet for your welcome bonus and start playing!

Two additional things to note on the sign-up process. First, you might be able to create an account with existing Google, Facebook, or Apple credentials. Feel free to do this for a streamlined sign-up. Second, most sweepstakes casinos require extra identity verification before you can redeem prizes. This is not part of the initial sign-up process; keep that in mind and consider doing it early to avoid delays when you eventually redeem.

Pros and cons of playing at sweeps casinos in the US

Sweeps casinos come with distinct advantages and setbacks. This list isn't comprehensive, but it provides a good overview of the positives and pain points of sweepstakes gaming.

Pros:

  • Play hundreds of casino-style games for fun with Gold Coins
  • Redeem real prizes when you play with Sweeps Coins
  • Tons of promotions, including welcome bonuses, daily login perks, and giveaways
  • Slots, live dealer games, bingo, scratchers, and more
  • Available in 40+ states
  • No purchase required

Cons:

  • Dedicated mobile apps are sporadically available
  • Single-player table games are limited
  • PayPal is not accepted at most casinos
  • Some sites have playthrough requirements on Sweeps Coins beyond 1x

Gold Coins vs. Sweeps Coins: how to tell the difference and how to get them

Sweepstakes Casinos do a great job of making Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins distinct. You can toggle between currencies by clicking a button at the top of a sweepstakes casino’s homepage and/or within a game; then the site will reload to allow you to play with the other currency.

One easy way to tell GC and SC apart is that Gold Coins are offered in much higher amounts. You might get 200,000 GC from a purchase and receive 20 SC as a gift. SC are harder to come by and more valuable because they can be redeemed.

You can get Gold Coins through promotions, giveaways, daily login bonuses, and purchases. Sweeps Coins can be received as part of promotions, freebies when you buy Gold Coins, or via mail-in requests. Each sweepstakes casino has unique promotions, so shop around to find more opportunities for free Coins.

Purchase methods and how to cash out at sweepstakes casinos

The most commonly accepted purchase methods at sweepstakes casino sites are:

  • Credit/debit card
  • Skrill
  • ACH
  • Online Banking via Trustly
  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay
  • Cryptocurrency

Every sweeps casino site is different and has its own list of accepted methods. For example, some sites only accept VISA or Mastercard credit/debit cards. Also, note that most crypto-based sweepstakes casinos only accept crypto. It’s best to steer clear of those sites if you aren’t already invested in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Redemption methods at sweepstakes casinos are more limited. Sites most commonly pay prize redemptions with one of four methods:

  • Gift cards
  • Skrill
  • Online banking/ACH
  • Cryptocurrency

Of these, gift cards and online banking are the most common.

Bear in mind that each method will have its own minimum redemption. Gift Cards often have low minimums, such as 10 SC, while cash prizes might be 75 or 100 SC.

What is the fastest-paying sweeps casino site?

Most sweepstakes casinos have similar payout times. Redemption requests require internal approval, and then the payment provider must process the redemption. For these reasons, most requests take 3 to 10 business days to process.

The fastest-paying sweepstakes casinos offer gift cards. Gift card redemptions are by far the fastest to process, often taking less than 24 hours.

Sweepstakes casino bonuses and promo codes

Bonuses and promotions abound at sweepstakes casinos. They are also different from the online casino bonuses that you'll see at real money casinos. Here are some of the most common types of offers you'll see at sweepstakes casino sites.

  • Welcome bonus: Gain a hefty chunk of Gold Coins and a smaller amount of SC just for signing up. Can only be claimed once.
  • Daily login bonus: Sign in each day for a bonus. The structure varies. Some sites offer a daily wheel spin for a random prize. Others offer increasing prices that rise for each consecutive login.
  • Refer a friend: Refer friends with your exclusive link and get rewards when they sign up and make qualifying purchases. The rewards are good, but the requirements friends must meet are often high.
  • Social media contests: Follow the Sweeps Casino on social platforms for a chance at SC and GC.
  • Tournaments and leaderboards: Play eligible games during tournaments and climb the leaderboard for a share of big prize pools. They’re hard to win, but the prizes can be huge.
  • Purchase discounts: Look out for frequent deals on Gold Coins, which often come with free SC as an added bonus.

Expert tips for playing and using sweeps casino offers

Make the most of sweepstakes casino bonuses by following these simple tips and tricks.

  • Log in daily to get your daily bonus.
  • Play games featured in tournaments for a chance at prizes beyond any winnings you earn.
  • Follow sites on social media for information about exclusive promotions.
  • Make a habit of checking the “Promotions” page whenever you log in. You may find new offers each day.

Top sweepstakes casino games

Playing at a sweepstakes casino is a lot like playing at a real casino in many ways. You’ll find all sorts of games, including slots, blackjack, and even live dealers.

Slots

Slots are the most plentiful of sweepstakes casino games. You’ll frequently find hundreds of them at a sweeps site, which means you have tons of amazing options.

Slots have two stats worth knowing: RTP and volatility. RTP is a measure of the game’s tendency to win over time. For example, an RTP of 96% means a slot will trend toward paying 96 coins for every 100 played. Note that this is measured over thousands of spins, so it’s not a guarantee.

Volatility is related to RTP, but it’s a measure of win size and frequency. A low volatility game tends to pay small wins fairly often, while a high volatility game has bigger wins with less frequency. Volatility is a scale, so a game can be medium, medium low, or medium high, too.

Use these as resources to help you pick your favorite slots to suit your play style.

Table games

Blackjack, roulette, baccarat … sweepstakes casinos have all the most popular table games. Craps is still pretty rare, but it’s becoming more popular

Single-player table games are still only sporadically available at sweepstakes casinos, but you can find them at a handful of sites. One advantage of table games is that they tend to have high RTPs, so they’re good for clearing playthrough requirements.

Live dealer games

Live dealer games blend the convenience of mobile play with the thrill of playing at a real table with a real dealer. You make decisions in real-time from your device while an actual dealer doles out cards and runs the game, all of which is live-streamed to your device. Popular live dealer games are blackjack, baccarat, roulette, and game shows.

Keno and bingo

Keno and bingo offer nice changes of pace at sweepstakes casinos. Both involve numbered balls appearing on screen. In keno, players pick numbers ahead of time, then hope for matches once the game round begins. Bingo is the standard five-in-a-row hunt.

Specialty games

This category covers, well, everything else. Games like Crash, Mines, Plinko, Slingo, scratchcards, and more fall into the specialty category. The variety is staggering, and they add some flair to the sweepstakes casino experience.

Expert tips for playing sweeps casino games

Our number one tip for playing casino games is simple: have fun. It sounds hokey, but the fact of the matter is that’s what sweepstakes casinos are for. If you’re not having fun, what’s the point? So, avoid playing games you don’t enjoy, even if the ones you do like have lower RTPs.

Beyond that main tip, which should supersede all others, here are a few additional tips for playing sweepstakes casinos.

  • Play with Gold Coins first: they exist for a reason! You can try a game for fun first and see whether you like it enough to play in Sweeps Coin mode.
  • Check RTP and volatility: these stats are usually available in a game’s help pages, and they can tell you a lot about the title before you spin.
  • Vary your play level: don’t go big right away. Vary your level of play per spin (or hand) to make your Coins go further.

Use autoplay for long sessions: Many slots let you spin many times in a row without pressing the spin button each time.

Sweepstakes casino fact and fiction

Let’s separate the truths and falsehoods you might find about sweepstakes casino sites.

You can’t win real money at sweepstakes casinos

This is true. You can only win Sweeps Coins at sweepstakes casinos. However, once you win enough, you can redeem them for real prizes, including cash.

Sweepstake casino sites are rigged

This is false. Sweepstakes casinos offer games from trusted providers, and those games are rigorously tested for fairness by third parties. Like any gaming site, though, the advantage is always with the house (the sweeps casino, in this case). While that’s true, it doesn’t mean the site is rigged. Everyone has the same fair chance to win.

Sweeps casinos are illegal and skirting the law

This is false. Sweepstakes casinos operate legally because they abide by sweepstakes laws. However, some states have prohibited sweepstakes casinos outright, in which case operators cannot offer their service in those markets.

Your private information isn’t safe and secure at sweeps casino sites

This is false. Your information is protected by the same encryption used by countless other online platforms. SSL encryption is the gold standard for keeping your data safe. Sweeps casino sites also use multifactor authentication and trusted identity verification services to keep your info safe.

Keep in mind that data is always at risk, even if it’s just to a small degree, online.

Sweepstakes casinos keep track of you

This is true to a degree, and it depends on what you mean. Every sweeps casino has a privacy policy detailing what data it collects and what it does with that data.

Chances are, this also relates to geolocation, which is usually required to confirm you’re within a legal state.

How to play at sweepstakes casinos responsibly and within your limits

Having fun and playing responsibly go hand in hand. Follow these tips to keep your play responsible at sweepstakes casinos.

  • Set limits and stick to them. Don’t spend more than you can afford to, and remember you can play for free with Gold Coins. Sweepstakes Casinos may also offer limit-setting tools within their platforms.
  • Check in with yourself every few minutes to ensure you’re still having fun. If you feel more irritated or down, that’s a good sign that it’s time to stop.
  • Know when to ask for help. It’s OK to seek help if you need it. Many organizations exist to help gamblers in need, including the National Council on Problem Gambling, GamAnon, Kindbridge, and more.

Why you can trust sweepstakes casino sites in the US

First and foremost, we’ve done the research to ensure we’re only recommending trusted and reputable sweepstakes casinos on this page.

Additionally, sweepstakes casinos offer a safe and legal alternative to real money online casinos. They use many of the same security measures as their real money online counterparts, so you can play with peace of mind.

The games are fair and varied, too, so everyone has the same chances of winning.

No, but you can win sweeps coins and redeem them for real prizes. Once you’ve played your SC at least once (higher requirements are imposed by some casinos), they become redeemable. Collect enough redeemable sweepstakes coins to request a prize.

How do I know if I really won a sweepstakes?

Any time you spin the reels or play a hand with sweeps coins, you’re entering a sweepstakes. Therefore, anything you win by playing is considered a sweepstakes win.

What is the best free game to win real money?

Sweepstakes casinos don’t offer real money wins. They offer redemptions. The best way to earn redemptions is to find games with high RTPs. Some table games are good options, like roulette and blackjack. High RTP slots are also solid choices.

Are sweepstakes casino winnings taxable?

Yes. Any redemptions you make at a sweepstakes casino are taxable. You must file them even if the site doesn’t send you a specific tax form.

What is the best sweepstakes casino app?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! The app one player likes most may be another’s least favorite. That said, our top picks are High 5 Casino, McLuck, and Pulsz. All three have streamlined and well-designed mobile apps.

How do I know if sweepstakes casinos are legit and safe?

First and foremost, we only recommend trustworthy and reputable sweepstakes casinos. Further, the sweepstakes sites we recommend use the legal sweepstakes model, offering purchases and redemptions but no deposits and withdrawals. These things, plus other signs, indicated that a sweepstakes casino is above board and trustworthy.

Expert tips to know about real money online casinos

The purpose of online casino gaming for real money is to have fun and be entertained. In that way, online casinos are a lot like any other hobby: video games, fantasy football, or watching TV. But because these sites involve using your real money, there are inherent risks involved. You should know this going in, and keep the following tips in mind before, during, and after your playing session at a real money online casino.

  • Use Responsible Gambling tools and strategies: many online casinos have specific tools you can use, such as deposit limits, spending caps, and time limits.
  • Stick to your budget: whether it’s a single deposit or a weekly limit, stick to your budget and don’t deposit or play with more than you can afford to lose.
  • Take frequent breaks: it can be easy to get caught up in the fun of a casino game. Take a breather every 15-30 minutes and walk around, do a chore, or switch to a different hobby. Breaks can help you play responsibly.
  • Check in with yourself: if you stop having fun, you should stop playing.
  • Don’t chase losses: if you lose a bit, don’t bet more than you can handle in an effort to recoup those losses. The odds aren’t in your favor by design.

We also encourage players to review responsible gambling tools and tips before playing. And remember, it’s OK  to ask for help if you need it.

How to get started at online casinos

While each real money online casino has a distinct sign-up process, the overall steps are similar at every platform. Follow the steps below to get started with an online casino, but bear in mind that the exact terminology and/or the order of the steps may be different from one casino site to the next.

  1. Use our links to head to your preferred online casino.
  2. Click “Sign Up,” “Join,” “Register,” or similar to start the sign-up process.
  3. Enter the required personal details: name, address, phone number, email, password, SSN, and date of birth. You may also be required to submit a photo ID at this point.
  4. If necessary and when prompted, enter your online casino promo code to claim your bonus.
  5. Complete account creation. Some sites may require you to verify your phone number and/or email with a link or code sent to you.
  6. Make a deposit with your preferred payment method—keep your bonus in mind as you do this.
  7. Start playing games right away.

That’s all there is to it! Most sign-up processes at online casinos only take a few minutes. If you run into any issues, contact online casino customer support.

Real money casinos vs. sweepstakes casinos

While real-money casinos and sweepstakes casinos have many similarities, their differences are what distinguish them.

Real money online casinos are only available in a select few states: Delaware, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. These sites accept players 21 or older, as long as they’re within the legal state’s borders (you can play even if you’re just visiting). You’ll need to provide an ID and other identifying information to prove your age and eligibility to play.

There’s a reason these sites are called real money online casinos. They use real money! You make deposits and withdrawals using your own money. Anything you win is yours to keep.

Sweepstakes casinos are available in more states, though the exact list of markets differs by operator. These sites feature similar games, sometimes even by the same developers, as those at real-money online casinos.

The big difference, however, is in the way you play. Sweepstakes casino sites have two modes of play. Standard play uses a standard in-game currency, frequently called Gold Coins. These are used only for fun. You can buy more, but they have no value beyond that you can use them to enjoy games at the site.

Then there’s premium mode, which uses a premium currency typically called Sweeps or Sweepstakes Coins. These cannot be purchased. Instead, you get them as special gifts from promotions or as an added bonus when you buy Gold Coins. You can play with SC and eventually redeem winnings for cash prizes and gift cards.

Top online casino games that pay real money

Variety is the spice of life and the spice of real money casinos. Playing at an online gaming site is similar to walking a brick-and-mortar casino floor; you’ll find plenty of different games, minimum bets, jackpots, and bonuses. Before you start playing at real money online casinos, it helps to brush up on the most popular game types and their likelihood to pay out.

Slots

The word “slots” might summon a particular image in your mind. Perhaps it's a classic three-reel game with 7s and bar symbols. OR maybe it's a game themed around your favorite movie. The fact that everyone’s first thought is different speaks to the vast variety of slot games. While the visuals and themes all differ widely, so, too, do the chances of winning.

Two major factors influence how a slot plays and how likely you are to win: RTP and volatility. Keep in mind that all slots are games of chance, so there’s never a guarantee that you’ll win.

Return to player or RTP is represented as a percentage, such as 96.5%. A slot with an RTP of 96.5% tends to pay out $96.50 over time for every $100 played. This measure is over many thousands of spins. The higher the RTP, the better a slot game will tend to pay out.

Volatility is a measure of a slot’s general win frequency and size. A high volatility slot tends to pay out large wins sporadically. A low volatility slot wins more often on average, but those wins are smaller. This is a scale, so you might also find medium volatility slots with moderate payouts of modest frequency. Treat these distinctions as preferences and not hard-and-fast rules. You might prefer playing for a while and hitting a big bonus, while your friend may prefer flashy wins even if they’re smaller in size.

Blackjack

Blackjack has a high RTP overall, though different factors can influence it. Because there’s a strategy element to blackjack, some games have an RTP of 99% or higher with ideal play “by the book.” You’re more likely to get 95-99% at the average blackjack table, online or otherwise.

When seeking a blackjack table, look at the payouts for when you hit a blackjack. For example, 3:2 is a better payout than 6:5, so your wins may take you further at one “table” versus another.

If you see side bets at a blackjack table, you’re better off avoiding them. Their big advertised payouts are highly unlikely, and they lower your overall win percentage if you constantly funnel money into them.

Roulette

There are three major roulette variants offered at online casinos: American (double zero), European (single zero), and French (single zero with a few alternate rules).

That order also represents their relative returns. American roulette has the lowest return average thanks to its two green zero slots. French Roulette, on the other hand, has the highest RTP thanks to a special “En Prison” rule that can save losing bets if the green space lands twice in a row.

Baccarat

Baccarat’s house edge can be as low as 1.06%, which means the RTP can be as high as 98.94%. The game’s elegance stems from its simplicity. At its core, baccarat has three bets: player, banker, or tie. The dealer runs the game, and you just hope for the side you bet on to win. It’s close to 50/50, but the tie throws a wrench into the gears. Plus, baccarat games often charge a small commission on banker bets, guaranteeing the casino a cut either way.

Video poker

Playing video poker with some strategic decisions (e.g., holding the right cards) can yield RTPs of 97% to 99% or more. The video poker space has all sorts of variety, which means the win chances can vary, too. Make sure you understand the mechanics of the game you’re playing to maximize your potential.

Live dealer games

Live dealer games are the closest online equivalent to playing at a real land-based casino. When you play live dealer blackjack or roulette, you can often get odds similar to the same games at a physical property. Once again, tough, stay away from side bets, which can easily siphon money with low odds of a potential payout.

Expert tips for online casino games

Online casino games are all chance-based, but some tips can keep your experience enjoyable.

  • Play for fun, not for wins: These games are meant for entertainment, and they all have a house edge, which gives the casino an advantage.
  • Adjust your bets to fit your budget: Many games let you bet different amounts, with some as low as $0.10 per spin. Use these minimums and maximums to play within your means.
  • Play in demo mode (where available): Some online casinos let you try games for free (without the opportunity to win) in demo mode. This is a great way to give a game a try before you play for real.
  • Brush up on RTP and volatility: Understanding Return to player and volatility can help you pick games that fit your playstyle.
  • Play “by the book” whenever you can: In games like blackjack where there’s a strategy element, play “by the book.” There are plenty of online guides that can teach you how.

Online casino bonuses: What you need to know

While you might be here for the fun and games (literally) real money casinos have even more to offer. An online casino bonus can amplify your gambling experience with extra rewards. You can take advantage of these offers by signing up, depositing, and playing at an online casino. Learn more about the most common types of bonuses below for new and existing casino players.

Expert tips to get the most out of your online casino bonus

Once you’re ready to sign up for an online casino (or multiple), keep these tips in mind. We’ve played at many sites and can speak from experience.

  • Pay attention to value over dollar amount: A high dollar amount in a bonus might not be worth it if you have a high playthrough requirement and relatively little time to claim it.
  • Note deadlines: Most casinos require you to meet their terms and conditions within a certain timeline.
  • Know the minimum deposit: Most bonuses are only available to players who make a minimum first deposit (usually around $10).
  • Know your playthrough requirement and contribution rates: These factors greatly influence your ability to clear the bonus and make it withdrawable. Look for low playthrough requirements and low contribution rates to make things easier.
  • Claim multiple bonuses, if desired: You can sign up for more than one casino and claim each bonus. This can be a nice way to play the field and try out different sites.

Online casino payment types and speed for real money players

Payment and withdrawal methods at online casinos vary by platform. However, most of the sites accept common methods, such as:

  • Credit card
  • Debit card
  • PayPal
  • Play+ Card
  • PayNearMe
  • Venmo
  • Apple Pay
  • Cash at a partnered casino
  • Gift cards
  • ACH echeck
  • Online banking
  • Wire transfer

Deposits at real money online casinos tend to process right away, so you can jump into the action immediately. We recommend picking one or two methods and sticking with them. That’s easier than trying a new method every time. Plus, it makes withdrawals easier.

Also, note that most online casinos have a minimum deposit of $5 or $10.

Most of the methods from above are accepted for withdrawals. The only major difference is in timing. Withdrawals tend to take at least a few hours or a few days at most. This is due to each online casino’s in-house review policy. They must approve each withdrawal before sending it to your chosen method, which may have its own processing time.

Real money online casino fact & fiction

You may have heard a whole host of claims about real money online casinos. Many may have been true, but chances are a large swathe of them are myths or half-truths. That’s where we come in. In this section, we’ll discuss some common assumptions about online real money casinos and tell you directly whether they’re true.

Online casinos are rigged

Verdict: False

The term “rigged” harkens back to days of the mafia controlling Las Vegas and fixing games in their favor. Nowadays, casinos (online or physical) offer the same level of fairness to all players.

That’s an important term: the same level of fairness. Why? Because the casino always has an edge. Even if it’s 1% on a game, that smidgen of an edge is enough to make the casino money when you bet. So, no, online casinos are not rigged. But they’re also made to make money for the operator. While you can and might win big, the more realistic outcome is a loss or breaking even.

Online casinos aren’t safe and secure

Verdict: False

Online casinos must abide by strict legal and regulatory standards, many of which include rules governing their security practices. Our recommended sites are all legal, licensed, and make full use of security features such as multi-factor authentication, SSL encryption, and trusted payment methods.

You can’t win at real money casinos

Verdict: False

You absolutely can win at real money online casinos. Chances are you won’t, just given the way odds and house edge both work. Still, the possibility is there, and the games are fair, giving the same chance to each player.

If you win at online casinos, you still won’t get your money

Verdict: False

Real talk: if an online casino refused to pay out your winnings, they could be legally liable. Most state laws require online casinos to have enough money in the bank to pay out all winnings.

If you don’t get paid for winnings, you may have legal recourse.

Online casinos are connected to the mafia

Verdict: False

Real money online casinos go through a rigorous licensing and approval process overseen by each state’s government. These processes ensure that the sites are operating legally and treating players fairly.

If you play online casino games long enough, you’ll win

Verdict: False

In fact, the opposite is more likely true. Casinos have a house edge, which gives them an advantage over players. Even if you play blackjack with perfect strategy over hundreds of hands, you’re mathematically likely to lose in the long term.

If you’re lucky enough to hit a sizable win, we recommend withdrawing most or all of it, because the more you play, the more likely you are to lose.

Your private information can be compromised

Verdict: Not quite

Giving your information to any online business comes with inherent risks. That’s why we can’t call this outright false. The truth is that casinos are susceptible to data leaks just like any other platform: online retailers, social media sites, banks, etc. Rest assured that casinos take diligent measures to keep your data secure.

How to play at online casinos responsibly and within your limits

Responsible play has many sub-elements to consider. While you are, of course, responsible for yourself, there are tools and services that can help you keep your online casino play fun and responsible.

First, start with yourself. Employ strategies to play responsibly, such as:

  • Setting and sticking to a budget
  • Limiting play sessions and deposits
  • Take frequent breaks

Next, explore the options available at your preferred online casino. Many have tools you can use to keep yourself in check, such as:

  • Daily, weekly, or monthly deposit limits
  • Session time limits
  • Self-exclusion or time-outs

Finally, there are plenty of services available for players who may need external help. Remember, it’s always OK to reach out if you think you're in need.
