HOT SPRINGS, Ark. -- Uno Ojo put in his final work for the Arkansas Derby on Saturday at Oaklawn Park, as the number of rivals the Rebel winner will face is starting to grow.  The Grade 1, $1.25 million Arkansas Derby is set for next Saturday, April 2. Entries will be taken on Sunday.   The Skipper Too, who was second to unbeaten We the People in a recent allowance at Oaklawn, is headed for the Arkansas Derby, his new trainer, John Ortiz, said on Saturday.  Trainer Chris Hartman said Saturday that he was leaning toward running Kavod, who was a troubled fourth in last month’s Grade 2, $1 million Rebel at Oaklawn. Hartman said the other option for the horse is the $400,000 Lafayette on April 8 at Keeneland.  If both horses go, it would bring the projected Arkansas Derby field to 11.   :: Want the best bonus in racing? He went by himself, under jockey Ramon Vazquez. The track was fast on a sunny morning approaching 50 degrees. Clockers had the horse galloping out five furlongs in 1:02.  “He didn’t need a fast work – he’s not a fast worker in the morning,” said trainer Ricky Courville. “We just wanted to get some air in him.  “Ramon came back and was happy with the way he worked, said he had so much horse. It didn’t take anything out of him. He was bouncing around the barn.”  Vazquez has the mount in the Arkansas Derby, which will reward its first four finishers Kentucky Derby points on a scale of 100-40-20-10.  Courville said Un Ojo will have some gate schooling and paddock schooling up to the Arkansas Derby.  “He’s fresh and he’s fit,” he said.  Cypress Creek Equine owns Un Ojo and also is a co-owner of Dream Lith, a Robertino Diodoro trainee who has been pointing for the Grade 3, $600,000 Fantasy. The Kentucky Oaks points race is to be held on the same card as the Arkansas Derby. Vazquez breezed Dream Lith a half-mile in a bullet 47.40 seconds prior to Un Ojo. Last year, Vazquez won the Grade 2 Golden Rod aboard Dream Lith.  :: KENTUCKY DERBY 2022: Point standings, prep schedule, news, and more The morning work session opened Saturday with Arkansas Derby probable We the People going a half-mile in company in 47.80. Clockers had him galloping out five furlongs in 1:00.80.  “That was what we were looking for,” said trainer Rodolphe Brisset. “Everything went pretty smooth.   “He always breezed in company. We always put a horse in front of him. He wants to be a little keen the first quarter. It helps – so he doesn’t go too fast.”  Flavien Prat has the mount on We the Poeple in the Arkansas Derby.  Other horses racing officials consider probable for the 1 1/8 miles race are Barber Road, Ben Diesel, Call Me Jamal, Chasing Time, Cyberknife, Doppelganger, and the filly Secret Oath.  Ben Diesel worked five furlongs in a bullet 59 seconds Saturday at Oaklawn.  Barber Road is scheduled to have his final work for the Arkansas Derby on Sunday, said Ortiz. It’s a day later than planned as the barn “skipped” a day of training with him earlier in the week due to the severe weather that hit the region.  “No need to rush to work,” said Ortiz. “We’ll wait one more day. I’m happy with where he is at.”  Ortiz said he plans on putting a half-mile maintenance move into Barber Road.  Barber Road is coming off a third-place finish in the Rebel. Before that race, he was second in both the Smarty Jones and the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn. Reylu Gutierrez has the mount in the Arkansas Derby.  Barber Road is listed on Daily Racing Form’s Derby Watch, as is Un Ojo.  The Skipper Too will be making his first start for Ortiz after previously being based at Gulfstream Park with trainer Juan Alvarado. Ortiz, who has ties to the connections, hosted The Skipper Too at his Oaklawn barn last out when the horse ran second in the first-level allowance March 12.  “He ran behind We the People in that last allowance,” Ortiz said. “We’ll put him in there looking to pick up some Derby points.”  Cristian Torres, who rode The Skipper Too last out, has the mount in the Arkansas Derby, said Ortiz. The horse is scheduled to breeze a half-mile on Sunday.  Kavod – whether he runs in the Arkansas Derby or Lafayette – will remove blinkers for his next start, said Hartman. He also said the horse would be ridden by Mitchell Murrill in either race.  “Most likely, I’m going to run in the Arkansas Derby,” said Hartman.  Kavod won the Advent Stakes in December at Oaklawn and also was fourth in the track’s Smarty Jones and Southwest.  The draw for the Arkansas Derby will be held in the winner’s circle on Sunday, according to an announcement Oaklawn paddock host Nancy Holthus made during a “Dawn at Oaklawn” program featuring Wayne Lukas, the trainer of Secret Oath. The draw will begin at 12:30 p.m. Central.  There were a number of other stakes-bound workers Saturday at Oaklawn, which will have four stakes supporting the Arkansas Derby next Saturday. They included Lone Rock, the multiple Grade 2 winner being pointed for one of those stakes, the Temperence Hill. First post for the card will be 12 noon Central.  *Smarty Jones winner Dash Attack worked five furlongs in 1:00 on Saturday at Oaklawn.
