With 10 wins from 33 starters, trainer Peter Eurton is in the midst of his best Del Mar summer meeting, a level of success that was unexpected. “No. Not at all,” he said on Wednesday. “No way.” Through Wednesday, Eurton, 66, was tied for third in the standings with Peter Miller, trailing leader Phil D’Amato (15) and Bob Baffert (12). Eurton had won with 30.3 percent of his starters, second only to Baffert’s 33 percent from 36 starters among the 10 leading trainers. To date, Eurton has won five maiden races, three allowance races and one starter allowance and one claiming race. What is missing so far is a stakes win which could occur before the season ends on Sept. 10. :: DRF's 2023 Saratoga headquarters: Previews, past performances, picks, recaps, news, and more. The stable star this year has been Exaulted, who is on course for the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile on turf Sept. 2, the same day recent allowance race winner Cherubic Factor is scheduled to run in the Grade 3 Green Flash Handicap at five furlongs on turf. Laurent, a maiden race winner earlier this month, is a probable starter in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante for 2-year-old fillies at seven furlongs on Sept. 9. Flattery is expected to run in the $100,000 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf for 2-year-olds at a mile on that afternoon. “The horses I’m going to run will be in tougher,” Eurton said. Exaulted, owned by Lee and Susan Searing, won the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita May 29 to gain a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita on Nov. 4. Eurton said at the time that Exaulted would not race again until the $300,000 Del Mar Mile. Exaulted is unbeaten in four starts this year, all at a mile on turf. The late spring-early summer rest gave the 6-year-old a brief vacation and a chance to be in peak form for a world-class race such as the BC Mile, Eurton said. “He wouldn’t have had any break whatsoever,” Eurton said. Exaulted will have a half-mile workout this weekend in advance of the Del Mar Mile. On Wednesday, Exaulted was eager to gallop at Del Mar. :: DRF's 2023 Del Mar headquarters: Previews, past performances, picks, recaps, news, and more. “He was out there flying around a little bit,” Eurton said. After the Del Mar Mile, Exaulted may start in the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile on turf at Santa Anita on Sept. 30. “If I want to start in the City of Hope, I can, or I could wait” for the BC Mile, Eurton said. Laurent won her debut in a maiden race at 5 1/2 furlongs on Aug. 13, overcoming a rough start and a wide trip to win by a nose. Laurent closed from last of nine and made up six lengths in the final furlong. “We had a very eventful trip,” Eurton said. Laurent was without a rider as of Wednesday. Leading jockey Juan Hernandez rode Laurent earlier this month, but is expected to ride another maiden race winner in Chatalas in the $300,000 Debutante. In coming days, Eurton starts Uplift in a maiden race for 2-year-olds at a mile on turf in Thursday’s fifth race, hoping the colt’s career debut will provide more focus. “He screws around a lot,” Eurton said of Uplift’s manners during training. “He looks around. “I know he’s not quick going short. I thought this was a good start.” On Friday, Eurton starts O K Rose in a maiden race for California-bred 2-year-old fillies at a mile on turf, and She’s Got a Way in an allowance race for fillies and mares at five furlongs on turf. O K Rose, who is by the Lion Heart stallion Tom’s Tribute, may need race experience, Eurton said. The filly has a familiar pedigree to Eurton. She is out of Sheeza Milky Way, a five-time winner who was third in the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on turf at Santa Anita in 2016 for Eurton. “She acts like she’ll [run on] turf for sure,” Eurton said. “I could probably have another work in her. I want to see a good effort. She’ll probably place, I’m hoping.” Eurton’s team of 2-year-old fillies includes the unraced Vibez, by Collected, who is nearing her debut in the final weeks of the Del Mar meeting after a series of solid works in recent months. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
