About Del Mar

Del Mar Racetrack, also known as the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, is a one-mile horse racing track nestled alongside the beach in Del Mar, Calif., just north of San Diego. It was opened in 1937 after being co-founded by one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Bing Crosby.

Del Mar runs a summer meeting from mid-July through early September each year, and since 2017 also has run a fall meeting in November and early December. The biggest race is the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic, which has been won by the likes of California Chrome, Beholder, Candy Ride, Shared Belief, and Lava Man.

Del Mar’s stakes schedule includes six Grade 1 races, including two for juveniles. The first is the Bing Crosby for sprinters, then the Clement L. Hirsch for fillies and mares, followed by the Del Mar Oaks, Pacific Classic, and then Del Mar Debutante and Futurity. The latter has produced the likes of Kentucky Derby winners Silver Charm, American Pharoah, Nyquist. Trainer Bob Baffert has the Del Mar Futurity a staggering 16 times.

Aside from racing, Del Mar is best known for events such as its Opening Day Hat Contest and for hosting specialty food and beer festivals, such as Tacos & Tequilas, Taste of New Orleans, and Uncorked Wine Festival.

Del Mar will once again host racing’s most prestigious day, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, in November 2024.
