Mischevious Alex came out of his victory in Saturday’s Grade 3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct in good order and all options are open for him including potentially training up to the Kentucky Derby on May 2, trainer John Servis said Sunday morning. Servis said he wants to get all the speed figures and sit down with owners Chuck Zacney and Glenn Bennett to decide which course of action to take with Mischevious Alex, who did earn 50 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby. Mischevious Alex earned a 90 Beyer Speed Figure for the Gotham, which Servis labeled as “okay, wasn’t great” Sunday morning. “He looked really good, ate up good, happy,” Servis said. “I got to sit down and really talk with Chuck and Glenn and figure out if we want to run him again.” Saturday, immediately after the race, Zacney indicated that he would like to run Mischevious Alex in the Wood Memorial, to give the colt a try around two turns and 1 1/8 miles, a distance he has not yet run. Sunday, Servis said he’s not sure that’s the best way to go. “The last thing I want him to do is run a bang-up race in the Wood and then bounce in the Derby,” Servis said. “I’ll sit down with Chuck and Glenn Bennett and see what they think. Right now, I don’t know if I’m going to run him again before the Derby.” :: KENTUCKY DERBY 2020: Derby Watch, point standings, prep schedule, news, and more In the Gotham, Mischevious Alex sat slightly off the early pace under Kendrick Carmouche before taking the lead around the far turn. He repelled the challenge of Untitled to win the one-mile race by two lengths. It was the third straight victory for Mischevious Alex, a son of Into Mischief, and his fourth from seven starts overall. He is 3 for 3 since Servis added blinkers. “He hasn’t done anything wrong that’s for sure, he handles the training I’ve been throwing at him great,” Servis said. “He’ll sit, you can put him anywhere, he’s got a turn of foot for sure. Just got to see how he’s doing, see how everybody feels about it, stick my toe in the water and see what the temperature is.” Servis, who in 2004 won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with Smarty Jones, has been on the record questioning whether Mischevious Alex truly wants to run a distance of ground. But, he’s not averse to giving the horse a chance. “He trains like he’ll run all day, but you look at his pedigree and you look at him, it makes you question it,” Servis said. “But I’ve seen it happen.” In 2005, Zacney won the Preakness and Belmont with Afleet Alex – trained by Tim Ritchey – after he finished third, beaten one length, in the Derby. Last year, Zacney thought he had a potential Derby horse in Maximus Mischief, who won the Remsen at 2 but who got injured, and was subsequently retired, after one start at 3. “Everybody has Derby dreams but you need a special horse,” Zacney said Saturday in the winner’s circle. “Afleet Alex was a special horse and I believe Maximus Mischief was going to be. I’m not ready to call Mischevious special yet, but he’s getting real close.” Diamond King to Charles Town Mischevious Alex was the second stakes winner on Saturday’s Aqueduct card for the Servis-Zacney-Bennett connections. Earlier, they won the $125,000 Stymie Stakes with Diamond King, a 5-year-old son of Quality Road who won for the sixth time in 18 starts. :: To stay up to date, follow us on: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Diamond King, making his first start in five months, scored a front-running, 1 1/4-length victory in the Stymie, earning a trip to West Virginia and the $1 million Charles Town Classic on April 18. Diamond King finished second in that race last year after winning an allowance race off a layoff. “Right now, off the top of my head, I’m thinking running in Charles Town then after that maybe give him another little break and look for something down the road because he runs so good fresh,” Servis said. “Last year, he came off the bench and ran his two best races back to back and petered out through the summer. This year, we’re going to work on his résumé and spot him a whole lot more to get the most out of him.” Diamond King earned a 98 Beyer Speed Figure for his Stymie victory. His career-best number was 100, earned in last year’s Charles Town Classic. On Monday, both Mischevious Alex and Diamond King were scheduled to ship back to South Florida on a Tex Sutton flight.
