Saratoga: Two of Pletcher’s top fillies work

Trainer Todd Pletcher worked his top two juvenile filly prospects, Dreaming of Julia and Kauai Katie, here Monday prior to shipping back to Belmont Park later this week.

Dreaming of Julia was the first of the pair to go, breezing an easy five furlongs in 1:02.41 and galloping out six furlongs in 1:15.76 immediately after the renovation break. Dreaming of Julia was scratched from Sunday’s Grade 1 Spinaway, part of the Stonestreet entry that also included the Steve Asmussen-trained Teen Pauline, who finished third as the odds-on favorite.

The undefeated Kauai Katie, easy winner of the Grade 2 Adirondack earlier in the meet, worked in company a short while later, breezing an easy half mile in 48.43 seconds before galloping out five eighths in 1:01.04 alongside Crazy Party.

“I thought both fillies went well,” said Pletcher. “Kauai Katie is still on target for the Matron. We’re pointing Dreaming of Julia for something at Belmont.

Pletcher said passing the Spinaway with Dreaming of Julia could prove a blessing in disguise down the road.

“She’s an A P Indy, a filly you’d expect to improve with more distance and time, and sometimes you have to manage the stable so hopefully it will develop out in the long run,” said Pletcher, referring to the fact both Dreaming of Julia and Teen Pauline are owned by Stonestreet.

Also, Pletcher said the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland on Oct. 6 could be next for Dominus, who led throughout to upset Data Link when making his turf debut in Saturday’s Grade 2 Bernard Baruch.

◗ Street Game, fifth in the West Point here on Aug. 16, breezed four furlongs in 46.83 seconds Monday morning over the Oklahoma turf course. It was the fastest of 32 works at the distance and came six days after he went four furlongs in 45.90 seconds.

Street Game is pointing to Sunday’s $150,000 Ashley T. Cole Stakes for New York-breds at Belmont Park. Street Game is 4 for 5 with a third at Belmont.
