As temperatures struggled to rise above zero degrees Fahrenheit in Lexington, Ky., the opening session of the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale completed its opening session Monday with an improved middle market from the previous year, but less fireworks at the top.
Florida-based Glen Hill Farm was the top bidder on the stakes-winning Maria’s Mon mare Louvakhova for $425,000 on Monday at the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale.
Grade 1 winner Unbridled Belle was secured by Masashi Yoshida’s Oiwake Farm for $400,000 on Monday morning at the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale, and will be sent to Japan to continue her broodmare career.
Life Happened, whose three graded stakes performers are led by Grade 2 winner Vyjack, sold for $750,000 to bloodstock agents Jason Litt and Alex Solis for owners LNJ Foxwoods on Monday during the opening session of the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale. The 13-year-old Stravinsky mare was consigned as agent by Select Sales. She was offered carrying a foal from the final crop of the late Harlan’s Holiday, whose standout runners include Grade 1 winner Into Mischief, the sire of Vyjack.

The Keeneland January sale of horses of all ages is in a somewhat contradictory spot on the calendar, but given the direction of the market, that’s not a bad place to be. The four-day auction will be the first major North American sale of 2014, running from Monday through Thursday in Lexington, Ky., and it will be the first follow-up to a robust 2013 sales season.
