A day after running third in a maiden special weight race, the 2-year-old filly Sly Okie topped the Thoroughbred winter mixed auction at Heritage Place in Oklahoma City on Saturday. She brought a final bid of $20,000 from Ed Melzer to help lift the sale to a 29 percent increase in average over the corresponding auction in 2013.
Stallions acquired as prospects at auction comprise a negligible slice of the overall U.S. sire population, and many of those purchases reside in smaller state breeding programs, making Central Banker’s New York home a notable exception. On the heels of a largely positive November auction season in central Kentucky, the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December mixed sale will look to continue that successful run as the weeks dwindle down in 2014. The one-day sale will be held Monday at Fasig-Tipton’s Midlantic base at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md., beginning at 11 a.m. Eastern.
