The November mixed sales season in Kentucky is best known for the high-priced racing and broodmare prospects that go through the sales ring, but the auctions are also an important time for buyers to form first impressions of weanlings by young stallions.
A filly from the first crop of unbeaten champion Frankel hammered for about $2,258,624 (1.8 million euros) on Thursday at the Goffs November foal sale, setting a new Irish record price for a weanling at public auction.
Grade 2 winner and millionaire Win Willy was purchased by Racho Natoches of Mexico on Friday for $45,000 at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale, and he will debut at stud in that country in 2015.
Pinhooker Ricky Leppala, who sold notable horses such as Horse of the Year Favorite Trick, Grade 1 winner Delaware Township, and multiple stakes winner Reneesgotzip, died on Nov. 4 at his home in Ocala, Fla., of cancer. He was 62.

The eighth session of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale closed with declines on Tuesday, but the run of high prices during the horses of racing age portion helped the sale’s cumulative gross surpass last year’s final total with three days still remaining.
