SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Though they each will have one more work before they ship west, trainer Todd Pletcher’s quartet of Breeders’ Cup Classic starters put in their last serious workouts Friday morning over the Oklahoma training track in Saratoga. Mindframe, a two-time Grade 1 winner this year, and Locked, the Santa Anita Handicap winner, went five furlongs together. Mindframe, who has not had a real race since June 28, worked inside of Locked and finished a length in front of him at the wire, completing five furlongs in 1:01.57 as timed by Daily Racing Form. Pletcher had Mindframe galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.56, seven furlongs in 1:27.67, and a mile 1:41.56. Later in the morning, Pacific Classic winner Fierceness and Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Antiquarian went five furlongs together in 1:00.56. All four horses are expected to be pre-entered Monday for the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 1 at Del Mar. Locked also could be pre-entered in the $1 million Dirt Mile. The Friday workout was Mindframe’s fifth since the Jockey Club Gold Cup, a race in which he was bumped by another horse and lost his rider and ran loose around the track for 1 1/8 miles before being apprehended by an outrider. :: BREEDERS’ CUP CLASSIC: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more “I don’t know how to quantify what we got out of the Jockey Club from a fitness perspective,” Pletcher said. “We felt like we needed a little more with him. We’ve gotten some good works, some good gallop-outs, so I think we accomplished what we were hoping to from a fitness perspective.” Locked, who is coming off a victory in the Grade 2 Woodward on Sept. 27, was not asked to gallop out as strongly as Mindframe. “We needed a good strong work from [Mindframe], a strong gallop-out. We weren’t asking quite as much from Locked on the gallop-out since he’s run more recently obviously,” Pletcher said. Mindframe and Locked went after the first renovation break, going out shortly after 8 a.m. Antiquarian and Fierceness went together following the second renovation break about 9:50 a.m. With Antiquarian on the outside of Fierceness, the pair was head and head through splits of 12.46 seconds, 24.20, and 35.80, and they got their last quarter in 24.76. The pair proceeded to gallop out six furlongs in 1:14.26 and seven furlongs in 1:28.33. In several of his previous works, Fierceness has drawn away from his workmate. Friday, he and Antiquarian were together throughout though Fierceness was going the easiest. “We wanted to match [Fierceness] up with a little stronger mate today and make sure we got a good solid work,” Pletcher said. “With all four horses, today was the sternest work we were going to look for. They’re going to ship [Oct. 26], we won’t look to do quite as much next week.” Regarding Antiquarian having to be ridden a bit harder than Fierceness, Pletcher said, “that’s kind of him, ride him along, but I thought he responded well, stayed on course, galloped out nicely.” Pletcher said he has not yet finalized riding assignments for Antiquarian and Locked. Luis Saez has come available with the defection of Highland Falls. On Thursday, Pletcher worked the 2-year-olds Ted Noffey (Juvenile) and Tommy Jo (Juvenile Fillies) for their respective races. Ted Noffey, the two-time Grade 1 winner and probable Juvenile favorite, went a half-mile in 49.45 in company with the maiden Grittiness. Tommy Jo, also a two-time Grade 1 winner after being elevated to first in the Alcibiades, went a half-mile on her own in 48.09, per track clockers. “She volunteered that, we didn’t have to ask her,” Pletcher said. “She’s always trained exceptionally well. I would have been disappointed had she not worked like that.” Pletcher’s other two Breeders’ Cup prospects, Final Score (Juvenile Turf) and Time to Dream (Juvenile Fillies Turf) will have their only works between their last starts and the Breeders’ Cup next Thursday or Friday. A decision on whether she is retired or races again is pending. Weaver BC quartet work Trainer George Weaver put all four of his potential Breeders’ Cup runners through workouts Friday morning in Saratoga, with Dorth Vader working on the Oklahoma training track and the trio of Governor Sam, Cy Fair, and Royal Testament working over the Oklahoma turf course. Dorth Vader, the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps winner who was beaten a nose by Thorpedo Anna in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign, worked a half-mile by herself in 48.53 for the BC Distaff, getting her last three furlongs in 36.01. She galloped out five furlongs in 1:02.29. Weaver said exercise rider Raul Alejandro worked Dorth Vader on Friday. Weaver noted that before the Molly Pitcher Stakes at Monmouth Park – where Dorth Vader finished fourth – regular rider John Velazquez was up for the work. “When you put a jock on her, she works more than you want, she didn’t run that good off the work and since then we made up our mind not to put the jock on her and work a strong five-eighths,” Weaver said. “She runs better just letting Raul work her. She doesn’t get all pumped up more than she needs to.” Weaver said Dorth Vader would ship to Del Mar on Wednesday to give her more time to acclimate. Weaver is pointing the fillies Cy Fair and Royal Testament to the Juvenile Turf Sprint, a race that typically oversubscribes. Cy Fair is 2 for 3, with a neck loss to Snow Face Princess in the Bolton Landing Stakes at Saratoga. She beat males in the Algonquin Stakes on Oct. 5 at Woodbine. On Friday, Cy Fair went a half-mile in 48.41 over the Oklahoma turf course, getting her final quarter in 23.35. Royal Testament, who beat males in the Rosie’s Stakes at Colonial Downs before running in the Grade 3 Matron at Aqueduct, went a slow half-mile in 51.37. “She’s kind of a narrow-made filly, usually I don’t breeze her that fast, but she did exactly what we wanted,” Weaver said. Governor Sam, pointing to the Turf Sprint, went a half-mile in 48.71 by himself over the Oklahoma turf. He is coming off a fourth-place finish, beaten a half-length, in the Grade 2 Woodford at Keeneland. “All my horses did what I wanted them to do,” Weaver said. “I had a great day of training. It doesn’t usually go like that.” :: Get the inside scoop from the morning workouts with Breeders' Cup Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the DRF Clocker Team. With the Angels returns a winner With the Angels, undefeated in four starts and the New York-bred champion 2-year-old filly of 2024, made a successful, albeit belated, 3-year-old debut Thursday, winning an open-company first-level allowance race by 2 1/2 lengths. It was her first start since Nov. 17, when she won the Key Cents Stakes at Aqueduct, her third statebred stakes win. “When you have a filly that’s a 2-year-old champion, that ran as brilliantly as she did last fall, there are high expectations from everyone – from the owners, from the public, you just don’t want to disappoint anyone.” trainer Linda Rice said. “She ran like a real pro.” Rice said it’s unlikely she will wheel her back in the Iroquois Stakes for New York-breds on Oct. 25. Rice mentioned the $150,000 Garland of Roses on Dec. 7 as a potential target. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
