Trainer Todd Pletcher’s trio of expected Belmont Stakes horses all put in workouts Friday morning at Palm Beach Downs, with Dr Post looking particularly impressive in his drill, which is posted on XBTV.com. The Belmont Stakes will be run June 20 at 1 1/8 miles. Dr Post, winner of the Unbridled Stakes at Gulfstream on April 25, and Gouverneur Morris, third in the Arkansas Derby division won by Charlatan, worked five furlongs together in 1:00.62. Dr Post, on the inside over what looked to be a track with moisture in it, finished about a half-length in front and proceeded to gallop out well ahead of Gouverneur Morris. “Dr Post has been training lights-out and continues to do things impressively,” Pletcher said Friday afternoon. “I thought it was an excellent work from him.” :: Belmont Stakes news, contenders, and more Gouverneur Morris on Friday morning wore blinkers, equipment he has not used in any of his five starts. Pletcher said jockey John Velazquez mentioned putting blinkers on the son of Constitution before the Arkansas Derby, but after he worked the horse in them, Pletcher opted not to use them in the race. Pletcher is undecided whether he will put them on for the Belmont. “I don’t think they made him too rank, but I can’t say I’ve seen a huge change with them,” Pletcher said. “He was on the bridle in the beginning, but they went off in 13 [seconds].” Farmington Road, fourth in the Arkansas Derby division won by Nadal, worked five furlongs in 59.70 seconds, working outside the 4-year-old filly Kitten by the Sea. “Good, solid work,” Pletcher said. “I had him shading a minute, looked good. He’s kind of a laid-back horse to train, but that was an excellent work today.” Pletcher said that all three horses would breeze one more time at Palm Beach Downs before shipping to New York on June 7 or 8. :: KENTUCKY DERBY 2020: Derby Watch, point standings, prep schedule, news, and more Meanwhile, at Palm Meadows, Sole Volante, the Sam F. Davis winner, was credited with one-mile work in 1:43.25, though trainer Patrick Biancone said the training session was just a bit faster than a two-minute lick. “I prefer to do that than to breeze them,” Biancone said. “We are very happy. The horse is doing really well.” Sole Volante has not run since finishing second to King Guillermo in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby on March 7. Sensing that there would not be a race of importance he would want to run Sole Volante in before June, Biancone gave Sole Volante a little freshening before restarting his training earlier this month. Biancone said he understands the decision by the New York Racing Association to cut the Belmont back to 1 1/8 miles, but said, “It’s not a good decision for me because my horse can go to two miles.” Biancone was unsure when he would ship Sole Volante to New York. He said it is likely that Luca Panici, who broke two ribs in a spill at Gulfstream on April 24, will be back aboard Sole Volante for the Belmont.
